In volatile areas, effective conflict resolution for humanitarian work emphasizes three key techniques: 1) Inclusive Dialogue and Mediation: engaging local leaders and stakeholders to foster trust and collective problem-solving; 2) Conflict-Sensitive Programming: which minimizes unintended harm by integrating community perspectives into all project stages; 3) Building Local Capacity: empowering local actors to manage disputes and sustain peace efforts. These approaches enhance impartiality and respect community dynamics, ensuring interventions are both culturally relevant and sustainable.

💡 “What we are really trying to do is to open up an understanding of the land sector to a whole variety of actors, whether that is people working in food security, human rights, democracy and governance, advocacy, to [people at] a local level to help them understand the elements of the land system. We help them understand how it impacts the conflict context, in a way that is accessible.” - CDA Senior Associate and Senior Fellow at the Duke Center for International Development, Maureen Moriarty, PhD, CAMS 🇨🇴 Developed on request of the Government of Colombia, the original Do No Harm in Land Tenure and Property Rights tool assisted with conflict sensitive implementation of the Victim’s Law, which governed the return of stolen and abandoned land to internally displaced Colombians and provided reparations following decades of civil conflict. 🌍 Conflict Sensitivity in Land Governance builds on the original tool and recognizes the evolving understanding of the relationship between land and conflict in complex contexts, including the dynamic impact of climate change.

After the successful launch of the Global Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts on 23 May in New York, #GenevaWaterHub organized an event “Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts: An Innovative Tool for Peacebuilding” at the 3rd Environmental Peacebuilding Conference #EnPax2024 in The Hague. Thank you #WeinthalErika (Duke University, United States), #TobiasvonLossow (Clingendael), #WimZwijnenburg (PAX), #TadesseKebebew (Geneva Water Hub), #MichikoFukase (UNICEF) for your valuable insights and support to the Alliance. The Global Alliance for Sparing Water from Armed Conflicts intends to ensure greater compliance with international law protecting freshwater and water-related installation in armed conflicts, better inform on the long-term humanitarian consequences resulting from armed conflicts, and harness expertise from the development and humanitarian sector to identify action, which can increase pre-conflict preparedness and resilience of water infrastructure. To achieve these aims, the Alliance will generate and distribute knowledge on reverberating effects, inform political and legal processes, work on pre-conflict preparedness and resilience of the water infrastructure, advocate for better protection and compliance, and work with partners to amplify its impact and foster collective action. Strengthened collaboration among diverse partners and actors from the peace, development, and humanitarian communities is essential for enhanced resilience. It improves monitoring, reporting, and accountability. It brings a variety of experience, knowledge, perspectives and insights. It helps disseminate the IHL rules and builds the culture of compliance.

Some (rare) good news in UK conflict policy! We have a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Conflict Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding! Huge congrats to Mercy Corps and Search for Common Ground for pulling this together and to the new APPG officers for taking this on! Amid surging global conflict and relentless funding cuts, seeing cross-party backing for an APPG on peace/conflict issues gives me hope that we can make conflict prevention a top priority for the UK going forwards. https://lnkd.in/eWujW3A8
