We speak different languages, the people with disabilities, disability advocates and accessibility experts versus the policy makers both in government and business. Meding this gap, I'm stubborn enough to insist on easy language in all cases, even in compliance and policy related situations: Today I had an interesting conversation about language on an intranet page, probably recognizable for otherhers in the accessibility and disability field: My point of view: easy to read and understand explanation about governance and policy. So both, the policy makers and beneficiary can read and understand the policy, increases accountability. My colleague aimed for A2 level, which is indeed the level of governance, compliance, and legal professionals. Because this is the language level they expect. (In which my colleague is right) Unfortunately A2 level is hard to understand for many, including people with disabilities for who we are working on a day to day base. We must make these policy makers understand the importance to be understood, don't we? I believe it all comes back to transparency and accountability. That is why I hope all accessibility leads, accessibility policy makers, etc. join my corner and use easy to read text to support understanding of what we do for all people with and without disabilities 💪 #InclusiveLanguage is more than wording, it must also be about understandable language! #accessiblity #inclusion #disability #language #business #government #policy #compliance

In recent engagements, I've observed a recurring issue in disability discussions – the persistent use of outdated terms in the Kenyan context like "PWDs" and "DPOs." It's crucial to evolve our language to better reflect respect and inclusivity. Let's shift to "people with disabilities" and not the acronym and "Organizations of Persons with disabilities" or ''OPDs'' for a more nuanced and empowering dialogue. As advocates, especially influential figures like government officials, let's lead by example, recognizing the diverse and dynamic nature of the disability community. By fostering a culture of inclusive language, we contribute to dismantling barriers perpetuated by outdated terminology. This is a reflection on the collective responsibility to embrace linguistic evolution in disability advocacy. Our words matter, shaping a narrative of inclusivity and equity. #InclusiveLanguage #DisabilityAdvocacy #LanguageEvolution #InclusionMatters #DisabilityInclusion #InclusionReflections Harun M. #AccessibleLiving - OT Assessments | Accessibility Consulting | Property Surveys & Technical Drawings/Plans | Adaptations
Digital Accessibility is fast improving. Very well done to #signly for introducing this innovative aspect to web accessibility.
Now this is a game changer in website accessibility! We were visiting the Disability Rights Florida page an noticed a pop-up window from Signly that allows you to scroll over text and you will see the sign language version of what is written! Can't wait for this to be widespread! Been reading the Independent Monitoring Mechanism issued by the United Nations in 2022 regarding recommendations from the UN to the Government on improving the rights of people with disabilities in New Zealand. I sat on a couple of working groups as a representative of an NGO that is a voice for people who experience mental distress. The working groups were part of drafting the Disability Action Plan 2014 - 2018 which outlines steps the Government is going to take to recognise and improve the rights of people with disabilities. It is disheartening to see how many of the issues still remain unaddressed, work programs not implemented and actions not followed through. #disability #disabilityrights #UNCRPD #humanrights

We'll explore why understanding the diverse needs of people with intellectual #disabilities requires more than just asking them what they want. For those with profound #intellectual disabilities, traditional methods like board participation may not be feasible. Instead, we need to focus on recognising their unique preferences through more personal and immersive approaches. Join me as we #challenge these assumptions and discuss how we can better support all individuals with disabilities in shaping the governance of services. #devsingh #devsinghperth #devsinghaus #australia #perth
