𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭 Recently, Sony developed a surgical robot that is capable of exchanging automatic surgical instruments with precision and control at the 𝐈𝐂𝐑𝐀𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 (International Conference on Robotics and Automation). The prototype was developed to assist extremely complex microsurgeries of small tissues, veins, and nerves. The new assistant surgical robot can smoothly replicate the movements of the surgeon’s hands and fingers, which are captured on a control device. This development proves to be beneficial when surgeons do not specialize in certain microsurgical procedures. In fact, an experiment conducted by 𝐴𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑖 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑈𝑛𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 in February 2024 showed how medical practitioners successfully created an anastomosis in animal blood vessels (𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝟎.𝟔 𝐦𝐦) by using the prototype. A remarkable feature of this robot is the 𝟏.𝟑-𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝟒𝐊 𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐃 microdisplays, which allow operators to see HD 4K images of the affected area as well as the movements of surgical instruments. Sony also released a demonstration video of how this microsurgery assistance robot is stitching a corn kernel. Amidst a shortage of skilled medical surgeons, surgical robots assist in precision operations, which helps reduce the workload in medical fields, thereby promoting the spread of advanced medical technology services. What is the most visible area of technical change in healthcare? Answer; Medical robotics. The global medical robot market is projected to reach $12.7 billion by 2025. This market includes surgical assistance robots; modular robots for rehabilitation, prosthetic limbs and exoskeletal support; service robots for routine hospital logistical tasks; social robots for automated patient interaction; and mobile robots for patient handling and transport.   The top surgical robotics companies are typically based in the US and include Intuitive Surgical, Auris Surgical Robotics (now owned by Johnson & Johnson), Medrobotics, Verb Surgical, Microbot Medical, Titan Medical, and CyberKnife. The list of surgeries commonly performed with robotic assistance is long and includes procedures such as cancer tissue removal, coronary artery bypass, gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and hip replacement. China has hundreds of medical equipment companies and it is probable that some will eventually engage in healthcare robotics. The best positioned is probably Mindray Medical (300760 SZ) but others, such as Lepu Medical Technology (300003 SZ), have shown interest. Both stocks are more attractively priced than in former years and stand to benefit from the growth in booming Chinese medical devices market, estimated to exceed US$235.7 billion by 2025. Since the development period for robotics is typically 4-to-5 times that of regular medical devices, most device companies will likely find it more rewarding to stick with the device market. #medicalrobots #medicaldevices #pharma

Current commercial platforms cover a wide range of surgical specialties, from urologic, to colorectal, to gynecologic surgery, to name a few. In the last years, many more companies have entered the market, offering advanced robotic surgical solutions, intensifying the competition, while at the same time, research in the field has been growing exponentially. The main goal of this Special Issue is to provide a current snapshot of the state of the art, both for the commercial platforms deployed in the Operating Room, as well as the research and innovation output from academia.
