Did you know that young adults transitioning from care face numerous challenges in accessing education and job opportunities? 🎓
Limited work experience, a lack of formal qualifications, and fewer resources can limit their access to steady employment or higher education.
Here's how we can all help make a positive difference for National Care Leavers Week:
Mentorship can make a world of difference—consider mentoring a young adult, providing internships or entry-level opportunities, or sponsoring job training programs that prepare care leavers for the workforce.
Together, we can help build a future where care leavers have equal opportunities to achieve their dreams and secure rewarding careers.

Happy National Employ Older Workers Week! This week, we’re recognizing the vital contributions of older adults and the impact of programs like Easterseals Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which helps mature workers gain the skills they need to reenter the workforce. Through valuable partnerships with community organizations, Easterseals affiliates provide mature job seekers with training, internships, and resources that make a lasting impact on their financial stability and quality of life.
One shining example comes from Easterseals Oregon, where their SCSEP program is transforming lives by helping older adults navigate technological advancements, build modern job skills, and regain their sense of purpose. In our latest blog, you’ll discover personal stories of individuals who’ve found hope, community, and employment through the program.

Jeanette Smith came to HIM's Birmingham office reeling from time spent on the streets stemming from drug and alcohol addiction. She admittedly lacked hope and purpose, and thought that her life would be that way forever. When she saw a HIM flyer in the mail, however, something changed. She wanted to do something better for herself and improve her situation.
She entered HIM Class 2023-5 full of excitement at the thought of changing her life, and was continually radiating joy throughout her time in class with an eagerness to learn and grow. She was then placed on an internship with Community on the Rise, where she was eventually offered a position on staff!
In the video below, hear from Jeanette about her job and from Community on the Rise Executive Director Avery Rhodes about why HIM graduates make great employees.
We are accepting applications for our US Volunteer Placement throughout the year! This is a great opportunity for those who want to see the work of US lawyers on cases of death row.

The deadline is Friday, March 22 for the E&ES Request for Quotes to provide summer employment for Chicago youth.
Learn more here -https://lnkd.in/guutBYBsChicago Housing Authority has provided summer employment programming for more than 1,000 youth each summer since 2009.
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a part of the Mayor’s One Summer Chicago initiative, which brings together government institutions, community-based organizations, and companies to offer over 30,000 employment and internship opportunities to youth and young adults ages.
CHA’s SYEP program is delivered in collaboration with E&ES’ FamilyWorks program, who is responsible for being the connection between SYEP youth, the worksite and CHA. SYEP is a six-week program operating June thru August, offering meaningful, paid work and skill development for youth ages 16 – 24.
Participants earn $15.80/hour for up to 120 hours, yet the benefits of SYEP extend beyond earned wages.
SYEP provides early exposure to career and education pathways, as well as opportunities that we believe have a positive, life-long impact on participants including:
• Better future employment prospects and increased earnings later in life
• Transitioning into the labor market while gaining valuable 21st century skills and networks to improve labor market prospects
• Developing the building-blocks they need to get to their next job and launch their career through meaningful, paid summer employment.
• Stemming summer learning loss with enrichment activities and literacy-rich programs • Encouraging learning and exploration in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment
• Strengthening social skills that will help them interact positively with others

Meet BeJay, one of TJC’s Nutrition Advocacy Interns! 🤩
During her internship, she conducted research for our webinar on the intersection of homelessness and hunger. Here’s what she found out:
⭐️ Between 2019-2021, there was a 33% increase in homelessness across the US (Source: Hud Exchange)
⭐️ 25% of renters in the U.S. spend half or more of their income solely on housing. This financial burden leaves insufficient resources for essential needs such as food (Source: Hud Exchange).
⭐️ In Tennessee, over 10,500 individuals were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2022, ranking us with the 16th highest homeless rate in the nation (Source: 2022 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report by The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).
⭐️ In 2023, Tennessee’s food insecurity rate was 17.5%, which is the third highest in the nation (Source: United States Census Bureau).
Those are large stats! What’s a solution? 🤔
Safety net programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, can be extremely effective in supporting people facing homelessness.
That said, individuals who are unhoused face significant barriers to accessing SNAP benefits, such as lack of transportation, technology, and government-issued identification documents.
TJC advocates for ways to make the application process easier, so that everyone can gain access to the help they need. 💪🏛️

The Shared Leadership Network met to explore the topic of Meaningfully Involving Families and Communities. THIS IS WHAT WE LEARNED:
Meaningfully involving students, families, and communities goes beyond asking for their opinions. It means intentionally involving them in the design process, actively encouraging families and community organizations to be on campus and involved in student activities, and valuing families as experts in their larger communities.
Here are some examples ⬇️
➡️ Teams devote time and funds for home visits, encouraging parent participation in some projects and internships, allowing students to gain credit while working to better their communities.
➡️ Teams decide to adopt a year-round schedule or adjust daily start and end times to better meet the needs of the students and community.
➡️ Teams advance a bilingual and bicultural program that is different from the district’s standard language immersion.
➡️ Teams decide to use a community schools model to meet the needs of the whole community, including offering medical and dental services, opening their campuses after school hours for activities and adult education, and providing social services connections.
