Bon voyage to Dr Mardi McNeil! 👋 Dr McNeil, a SAEF investigator and marine geoscientist with Geoscience Australia, is joining the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research’s latest voyage aboard the RV #Polarstern. 🛳 Dr McNeil is joining an international team of 53 scientists on an expedition to East Antarctica to study how its ice sheet has changed in the past. Very little is known about how the East Antarctic ice sheet interacts with the seabed along the coast and continental shelf. Dr McNeil and the team will be aiming to fill some of these knowledge gaps by mapping the seabed to identify geological features and patterns. These will provide clues into the past movement of ice shelves and glaciers. 🔎 The research will seek to understand how far from land the ice extended, its thickness and depth at different periods in the past. These insights into the past response of the ice sheet to climatic and environmental change will offer vital information to help predict its future. September 7-11, 2023: Leg 4 started with a promising note–good weather and calm seas. Ten new VISIONS students boarded the R/V Thomas G. Thompson to have their first experiences at sea. A large part of operations during Leg 4 are focusing on recovering and redeploying cabled Deep Profiler moorings that host an instrumented vehicle, which at the Slope Base site traverses up to ~ 2700 m (8858 ft) of ocean water daily. These moorings are a companion to the Shallow Profiler Moorings, which in concert are providing unprecedented, real-time monitoring of ocean environmental conditions throughout the entire water column. New article just out – Published in JGR Oceans First attempt to successfully simulate the wavenumber-4 pattern of Southern Ocean sea surface temperature using a coupled model, uncovering the underlying physical processes. The main findings are: • Southwestern subtropical Pacific SST plays a crucial role in generating SST wavenumber-4 pattern via circumpolar atmospheric variability • The ocean mixed layer and upper ocean processes are found to be important for the growth and decay of the SST wavenumber-4 pattern • The tropical SST variability has a very limited effect on the generation of SST wavenumber-4 pattern Find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/en94BgMD

🌊🔬 It’s a great day to be on an ice breaker! Our L2140‐i water isotope analyzer beats the heat in the summer aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy. Cruising the Arctic Ocean with Jeffrey Welker of the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Oulu, Finland, and Ben Kopec of the Michigan Technological University, the L2140-i with the Continuous Water Sampler is analyzing δ18O and deuterium excess in surface seawater to pinpoint the sources of the increasing influx of freshwater in the Arctic Ocean.
