POSCO, South Korea's leading steel manufacturer, plans to reline its coal-powered blast furnaces, extending coal-based steel production by 15-20 years. This decision is expected to generate over 199 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, posing a significant challenge to global decarbonization efforts. For months, local and global groups have urged POSCO to phase out coal or at least provide a clear transition plan. Unfortunately, there’s been no official response from POSCO, underscoring the need for external pressure to catalyze change. On June 2nd, a group of 19 civil society organizations from around the world sent letters to BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG and Volkswagen, urging the German automakers to address their use of #steel from POSCO and hold their steel supplier accountable to their stated decarbonization goals. By demanding transparent phase-out plans for coal facilities and refusing to purchase steel from high-emission suppliers, automakers can set a powerful precedent for cleaner supply chains and environmental stewardship. Their leadership in this space can push steel manufacturers like POSCO towards adopting more sustainable production methods. We stand with the groups in calling on BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen to align their supply chains with their climate commitments and drive the demand for sustainable steel. ➡ More info about POSCO: https://lnkd.in/gRFUze4e ➡ More info about blast furnace relining: https://lnkd.in/g68ZdPAS
