On Saturday, my husband and I volunteered with thousands of other people for the PDX (Portland Airport) new terminal Dress Rehearsal, before the grand opening. We were given scripts and acted as passengers: checking our bags, going through security, boarding the plane - and every step in between. When our volunteer shift was complete they said: "Locals made PDX the local-est airport yet. We teamed up with local builders, makers, and forest caretakers. We made space for more local spots. We added a little PNW magic. Then we tested the space with you - our community, friends, and family. Thank you for helping make our airport the best place to come home to." The new airport design inspires, and the focus on local businesses is encouraging for our local economy. The Dress Rehearsal was well done... From a personal perspective, it felt very thoughtful. From a business perspective, it felt smart and strategic. It left me thinking about our new offer, the Mighty Impacts Continuum... we'll be having our "dress rehearsal" soon. Stay tuned!

Zebra crossings are well understood by drivers. Could more zebra crossings help reinforce the recent change to the Highway Code giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists at junctions?

Understand the guidelines and policies Most aspects of healthcare are covered by clinical guidelines and policies, which outline: which treatments are most likely to work for you how your healthcare professionals should interact with you in general the quality of service they should provide. Examples of these documents include: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, which outline evidence-based treatment options for different conditions. (Find out more on the NICE website.) Confidentiality and data protection policies, which outline your rights regarding any personal information your doctor holds about you, and what they must do to keep it private. Codes of practice for people who are members of professional bodies, for example doctors, nurses and accredited counsellors. Complaints procedures. These should be accessible and easy to find using a web search, but you can also ask your doctor or healthcare provider to show them to you. Find an advocate An advocate is an independent person who is there to represent your opinion and help make your voice heard. This can be extremely helpful if you are finding it hard to let healthcare professionals know what you want, or you're facing barriers to getting support. An advocate can: come with you to appointments help you ask questions and assert your wishes support you if you want to make a complaint or appeal any decisions. A friend, family member or carer might be willing to act as your advocate informally. Or you could consider professional advocacy services. (See our pages on advocacy for more information, including how to find an advocate.)

Innovation isn't always shiny new (expensive) or complicated, it can simply be using something commonplace in a new way. The £101 million of new funding announced for Active Travel today is of course welcome to help address the staggering 1.5B car trips being made every year for journeys of less than a mile. But what is really exciting, is things like the side road zebra trials moving to the conclusion, a process started 4 years ago in Greater Manchester. Allowing the well-understood stripes to be used where they can do the most good, at the mouth of side roads, showed huge benefits in those on-road trials conducted in Tameside. 65% more drivers stopped for people to cross and 8:10 parents and carers preferred it. This is a simple, very affordable and fast way to transform the school run, give more kids transport independence and reduce stress for those that are a little slower to cross. Like many places across the country, Greater Manchester has committed to making active travel the foundation of its transport network, a move that will also increase its catchment for public transport 10 fold, so secure vital bus and train services. And their approach is working. Since that video was filmed in 2021 the number of very short car journeys in the region have dropped by a staggering *100 million* trips a year. Imagine if we use simple methods like this across the whole country and make cycling, walking and wheeling easier. We will all win. https://lnkd.in/eSJRy4pb
