𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆, 𝒘𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚. This week, our ward sparkled with laughter and camaraderie as we celebrated the (belated) New Year and the birthdays of our colleagues born between January and April 🎂 Reflecting back to my early nursing days, I vividly recall feeling lost and alone. Yet, the warmth and support from seasoned colleagues transformed that uncertainty into a sense of belonging. They bought me meals when I was too busy to buy my own, offered encouragement during tough shifts, and made sure we connected over meals after work. Before I knew it, they weren't just mentors—they were family. That feeling has never left me. It's why organizing events like this brings me immense joy. It's more than just fun; it's about fostering friendships, understanding our colleagues and bosses as individuals, and building bridges with colleagues across departments. These connections lay the foundation for future collaborations, like cross-training initiatives, that enhance our collective ability to deliver better patient care. I firmly believe that cultivating a healthy nursing community isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity. It's what makes our profession magnetic, improves retention rates, and, most importantly, elevates the quality of care we provide to our patients. Here's to more memories and an ever expanding work family 🌟 #WorkFamily #Nursing #Healthy #Community #PatientCare #workculture

I ended up in Accident & Emergency in Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown this week. Unable to eat or sleep for nearly 5 days. Barely able to drink, incapable of talking (much to the twisted delight of my wife and children!) and now struggling to breathe, there’s definitely a sense of vulnerability from a typically physically healthy male when hammered with a first bout of severe tonsilitis. Being admitted to busy Irish hospital on a mid-week evening really was an eye opener for me. We're consistently fed the negative when it comes to Irish hospitals – and there really are plenty of negatives; issues around staff shortages, embargoes, wasted public funding, lack of bed space and the food (it really is terrible for anyone reading this outside of Ireland!). But the public facing staff…they were absolutely incredible. Everything that I, (or anyone else who was admitted that night) requested was dealt with from a place of empathy, courtesy and understanding. Consistently. Consultants. The senior, junior and trainee doctors. The nurses of all types and grades. The night porters and day porters, the cleaning staff, kitchen staff and security personnel. An entire ecosystem of qualifications, skillsets and paygrades all interacting with and supporting each other with the patients welfare being the end goal. All in pretty difficult working conditions. I think service providers across all sectors and industries could do with sending their staff to the A&E in Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown to see how to be at your best helping people at their worst. (I'm sure they'd hate this recommendation...they're crowded enough!!!) One last point…I'd say at the very least 80% of all staff working tirelessly were Filipinos, Indian, Polish, Bangladeshi, Romanian, Nigerian and more... Our country would literally cease to function without hard working immigrants. So, thanks to all the staff and hard working people who probably don't get enough credit in the current climate. Right, I'm not meant to be working...! #HSE #Healthcare #Hospital #nmbi #StaffNurses #Nursing Health Service Executive [Alt Text} Picture is the main entrance to Connolly Hospital. It is a modern looking building with mustard style coloring and plenty of windows on the left side.

𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝: 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙄𝙜𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙨 A young lady I know began experiencing consistent headaches out of the blue. Her friends, concerned for her well-being, urged her to visit a clinic and get checked. She brushed off their advice, attributing the headaches to dehydration and vowing to drink more water. Days turned into weeks, and the headaches persisted, gradually worsening. Finally, she decided to see a doctor. What she thought was a minor issue turned out to be something far more serious. She was unable to do anything for over a week and is now receiving treatments she should have started much earlier. This story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-care and paying attention to our bodies. It’s easy to dismiss minor discomforts and assume they’ll go away on their own, but sometimes, they can be indicative of underlying health issues that require professional attention. As the weekend approaches, remember to prioritize your well-being. Take yourself on a well-deserved outing, go on a walk, embrace nature, learn pottery, visit a museum—just do anything therapeutic that makes you happy to ease off the stress. Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Don’t wait until a minor issue becomes a major problem. That little headache, toothache, or any other discomfort you’re experiencing right now? Get it checked today. Your health is too precious to ignore. 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱. "Complaints about the number and sufficiency of staff are the third most complained about issue in residential care." The ongoing care workforce crisis has been highlighted once again in the Quarter 3 (January - March 2024) Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Sector Performance Report by the Australian Government Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. While the report shares the good news that 91% of residential care services met the responsibility to have at least one Registered Nurse (RN) on-site and on duty 24/7, it also highlighted that "recruitment, training and support is an area of concern in the individual requirements of both residential care and home services." You can read the full report here: acqsc-sector-performance-report-quarter-3-january-march-2024-accessible.pdf (agedcarequality.gov.au) #careworkforcecrisis #agedcareworkforce #careworkforce
