New case study: West Hallington Reservoir - Design and construction of two 700mm diameter siphons for reservoir drawdown Northumbrian Water's Hallington West Reservoir is situated near the village of Colwell in the Tynedale district of Northumberland. The reservoir was constructed between 1884 and 1890 for Newcastle & Gateshead Water Company for the purpose of municipal water supply. It has a maximum depth of 12.1m, a capacity of 3.3Mm3 and a surface area of 50 hectares at the full supply level . An inspection carried out under Section 10 of the Reservoirs Act 1975, identified that the reservoir had insufficient drawdown capability, and thus needed to be increased such that the reservoir level can be drawn down by 4.8m in 8 days. MMB developed a design solution which utilises two 700mm diameter siphons on the west embankment to operate at a combined flow rate of 3.2m3/s. The new siphon pipeline, alongside a temporary pump arrangement and the existing scour pipes, will meet the required drawdown capacity. The siphon flows will be conveyed across a stretch of adjacent field which Northumbrian Water has purchased. The flows will then either percolate to ground or gravitate to the Coal Burn and eventually to the River North Tyne. Pile Cap work being done for Atop Projects Limited for Prime Home Estate, Ajah. A soil test was carried out and it was discovered that the bearing capacity of the soil is weak which makes it incapable of bearing the load of the superstructure to be imposed on them. Soil testing in building construction involves investigating soil characteristics on a plot. Geotechnical engineers or engineering geologists perform these tests to gather information crucial for designing safe and secure foundations and earthworks for your specific project. To construct a structurally stable structure that will stand the test of time it was concluded that a Pile foundation must be done. Soil test is a very important step before construction process is carried out. It's important to follow the proper steps to avoid structural failure in the future and loss of lives. Build right✅

🚀 Estimating Underground Utilities Most construction projects will require excavation or proper trenches to ensure the safe installation of utility lines, whether dry or wet utilities. On the surface, trenching might seem like a relatively straightforward process, but like everything in life, when you look a little closer, it is more complicated and labor-intensive than first meets the eye. US construction slowed by difficulties to source electrical steel amid lack of investment, by Fastmarkets' Renzo Pipoli US construction contractors — including for residential, commercial and manufacturing facilities — have reported long delays and unpredictability in obtaining electrical transformers. This is due to inadequate electrical steel supplies amid missing investment decisions in the US to expand production of the material. Contractors reported “extremely long and unpredictable lead times” for transformers, Kenneth Simonson, chief economist of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), told Fastmarkets on Monday April 15. Contractors waiting for electrical transformers are “quoted a long lead time and then told of a further delay when the delivery date is imminent,” Simonson said. “I’m not close to electrical equipment manufacturers or their steel suppliers but I’m told that Cleveland-Cliffs, the principal supplier of grain-oriented electrical steel that’s essential for transformers, has been reluctant to expand production, which is producing the long lead times,” he added. It was not possible to obtain a reply from Cleveland-Cliffs to requests for comment by the time of publication. Similarly, the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) — an association that represents US electric companies — said in a statement that “electric companies today still are facing unprecedented lead times for transformers.” The AGC and the EEI — along with groups such as the National Association of Home Builders, the American Public Power Association and Leading Builders of America — wrote to the Senate and House in November 2022 to ask for $1 billion that year to address the problems with transformer supplies. Material availability was identified as a leading cause in the delays. The letter included recommendations such as “building manufacturing capacity to support long-term demand and investing in domestic production of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), a key transformer component.” Read the full article at www.fastmarkets.com. Estimating underground utilities is a critical step in most civil construction projects. Waiting until excavation works have commenced to find out where you are cutting through rock can result in costly delays and safety hazards. AGTEK's Underground software offers a solution to this problem. With AGTEK's Underground, you can easily highlight potential pipe conflicts, estimate trench excavation and backfill quantities, identify strata quantities and locations, and determine pipe lengths and pit counts during the bidding stage. This powerful software can help you save time and money, while ensuring a safer and more efficient construction methodology. Don't wait until it's too late to estimate your underground utilities. Try AGTEK's Underground today and take the first step towards a successful construction project.
