Co-founder, THE DEN. Leader of an #IRLrevolution, fighting to give every UK teenager somewhere to socialise IRL | Ex-CEO, CMO | Executive coach | Advisor | Consultant |
This national service proposal has really got me thinking about the perceptions people have (particularly older people, and even more so those from a more privileged background) of young people. This perception that they don't care, aren't engaged with community, don't 'lean in' to society. The undertone that it's their own fault that they're struggling with the largest mental health crisis we've ever seen. That if they just got out of the house and 'did something for others', they'd feel so much better. That ALL THIS is somehow our CHILDREN'S fault. So naturally, forcing them to 'volunteer' (oh, the irony) is a great solution... Let's step back. There are about 720,000 18 year olds in the UK. 84% are in some form of education, employment or training. 35% are specifically at university (of which about 50% ALSO hold down a job). And about 10% of them have caring responsibilities. Can you imagine if, on top of holding down a job, caring for a parent or sibling (in lieu of a broken care system and extortionate childcare), getting yourself through a training scheme, going to uni (whilst ALSO working, and running up debt), you were forced to spend one weekend in four, volunteering? Just think about it. Imagine in YOUR hectic life, where you're trying to make ends meet, care for others, develop yourself, and God forbid have some fun, the government suddenly says you had to spend one weekend in four volunteering? A government, by the way that you definitely haven't voted for. Because you were too young to have a say. So who is this aimed at? The 16% of 18 year olds who are not in education, employment or training, a large proportion of whom are unpaid carers, or in zero hours jobs trying to make ends meet? Or the 84% already in work, in education, in training? Our young people are struggling to find their way in our society because WE HAVE EXPLICITLY ENGINEERED THEM OUT. We took away £1.1b of youth funding and stood by as the high streets died, whilst giving tax breaks and bottomless funding to eager tech platforms that profit from their misery. We told them we don't want them. That they loiter, cause crime, that they're intimidating. We share photos of them on nosey-neighbour 'community' groups with shouty headlines like 'DOES ANYONE KNOW THIS BOY'. We left them with nowhere to go to be together, no way of learning how to navigate society and of forming the next generation of our communities IRL. The mental health crisis this generation are suffering is NOT their fault. And forcing them to volunteer every fourth weekend will not repair the damage done by the teenage years we have consigned them to, spent living their lives through a screen. But I suspect, if you didn't spend your late teens caring for parents or siblings, whilst holding down a job whilst also trying to train, or do a degree, and desperately staving off mounting debt, one weekend in four volunteering sounds like an excellent idea. #IRLrevolution #youtheconomy

Following on from a question that was posed at the Association's AGM regarding British veteran cards being issued to overseas residents, the below advice has recently been posted to the MoD website. -------------- An HM Armed Forces Veteran Card is a way to prove that you served in the UK armed forces. The card can make it quicker and easier to apply for support as a veteran. It’s free to apply. You can currently only apply for a Veteran Card if you have a UK address. Veterans who do not have a UK address will be able to apply later this year. Check what you can do with a Veteran Card : https://lnkd.in/eJFK3Mk6 Who can get an HM Armed Forces Veteran Card? You can apply if you were in the regulars or reserves for the: · Royal Navy · Army · Royal Air Force (RAF) · Royal Marines If you served in another group in the UK armed forces, you may still be able to get a card. You can check when you apply online or when you call to request a postal form. You cannot apply if you served: · in the armed forces of another country · alongside the UK armed forces, for example in the Canadian Navy or Royal Australian Air Force

Good Morning all. Black Onyx Concepts and Money and Me Solicitors are proud to announce our partnership in hosting a significant event dedicated to supporting veterans in the Staffordshire area. The event, organised by the Staffordshire Veterans Support Network (SVSN), will take place on April 4th, 2024, from 13:00 to 16:00 at : Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, Festival Park, ST1 5BE. Our aim is to create a platform for veterans from the Staffordshire area to use as a support network by engaging with, not only other veterans, but with businesses that provide essential support and guidance to service leavers as they transition into civilian life and employment. Veterans attending the SVSN event will benefit from being able to engage with local businesses that have been specifically selected to attend based on their alignment of values with the Armed Forces Covenant. Throughout Staffordshire, there is a wide variety of businesses who actively promote the employment of veterans and the benefits from doing so. The support and guidance that is available to the veterans of Staffordshire covers a wide variety of topics. These areas are outlined below, to hopefully provide a better understanding of what the SVSN can offer the veteran community, reservists and their families: • Employment opportunities for veterans with local businesses who support the veteran community / veteran owned businesses. • Training opportunities for veterans seeking work in the security and risk management sector delivered by veteran instructors. • Professional legal support and guidance for veterans seeking compensation for mis-sold military pensions. • Professional legal support and guidance for veterans seeking compensation for military hearing and injury claims. • Charitable organisations who specifically raise awareness, funds and essential support to veterans Veterans, reservists, and their families are encouraged to attend this event to find out about the valuable resources and opportunities that are available. 🌍 Location - Stoke On Trent 🇬🇧 #veteranshelpingveterans #openday #veteraowned #veteranownedandoperated #allarewelcomehere

Avoid Costly SBP, VGLI, and TSP Mistakes for Service Members and Veterans | Creator of Military Money Mistakes | Building Financial Strength & Flexibility 💰🏋️🤸| Financial Advisor | Military Transition Podcaster 🎙
I'm not sure why any service member would NEED any extra motivators to file their VA Disability claim during the #militarytransition, but if you're one of the few who does...here's a WHOLE BUNCH of 'em! 😃 Fun fact, in the event you receive a service-connected rating from the VA, there are additional benefits that you may qualify for based on that rating known as "derivatives". 🤔 I'll share a few of my favorites real quick: 💥 10-point Veteran preference in Federal hiring. 💥 Waiver of VA funding fee for VA home loan 💥 Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment 💥 No cost health care and prescription meds for service-connected disabilities 💥 Concurrent receipt of VA Disability and Military Retirement pay (above 50%) 💥 No cost dental care....trust me, that's a BIG one 🦷 And those are just some of the additional federal benefits...you'll have to go look up the STATE benefits on your own for now (don't worry, I'm working on something for that). If you want to see the full list, check out the link at the bottom of this post. ⬇️ Of course in order to take advantage of any of those benefits, you have to file your claim...so don't be that guy who's "not gonna be that guy". 👎 👉 Follow me for more insights into VA Disability, SBP, VGLI, TSP, and Military Transition. Fantastic case study on how digital inclusion mixed with financial inclusion can bring real change and success ⚡
🌍 Today, on #InternationalDayofOlderPersons2024, we celebrate the theme of ageing with dignity. As many individuals in the UK face challenges like increasing bills and reduced access to the winter fuel payment, it's crucial that we rally around the older people in our communities and guide them towards available resources. At Lightning Reach, we're proud to provide a platform that has so far enabled over 10,000 older individuals to find the support they need with respect and ease. Let us introduce you to Elizabeth & Michael from Torpoint: Elizabeth, 62, was caring for her husband Michael, 79, a Royal Navy veteran Michael, 79, who was suffering severe tinnitus and depression. Facing financial and digital challenges, Elizabeth signed up to Lightning Reach to see her options. The couple received fantastic financial support through our partners at the Royal British Legion and The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, receiving over £900 in under a week, significantly reducing the risk of their utilities being cut off. Elizabeth was also given the opportunity to grow her digital skills through Vodafone Digital Skills Helpline and We Are Digital, empowering her to be able to work remotely whilst caring for Michael, and improve their situation. 💫 “The help that the Lightning Reach team gave me was incredible. The patience you showed was great in helping me get through and submitting applications. Let’s continue to support the older people around us by ensuring they have access to the assistance they deserve. Read their story here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eg6kFZXD #SupportOlderPeople #DigitalInclusion
