Royal Air Force (RAF) F-35B fighter jets from 617 Squadron, Marham, United Kingdom, have deployed to Iceland to commence NATO’s Air Policing mission. This is the first time British F-35s will have taken part in any NATO air policing mission. The F-35Bs will defend NATO airspace in the Arctic Region and provide Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland’s Peacetime Preparedness Needs – or ASIC IPPN. The last deployment for British jets in Iceland was 2019, when four Typhoon jets flew 59 training sorties and more than 180 practice intercepts. In British service the aircraft is known only as F-35B Lightning, losing its ‘II’ (it is actually the RAF’s third Lightning, after the Lockheed P-38 and English Electric Lightning). The first frontline Lightning unit, 617 Sqn ‘Dambusters’ arrived at RAF Marham with an initial four aircraft on June 6, 2018. The F-35 Lightning is held at high readiness to deploy in support of UK and NATO operations worldwide – from both land and sea. It is a multi-role combat aircraft equipped with advanced sensors, mission systems and low observable stealth technology. This means that enemy radar systems cannot easily detect the aircraft, giving those nations operating the F-35 a significant tactical advantage in many operational scenarios. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gz2bqhpx

New photos captured a US B-2 Spirit bomber flying with Japanese F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft for the first time. The aircraft flew together in the Indo-Pacific as part of the ongoing Bomber Task Force mission, which integrates bombers into operations with US allies and partners and demonstrates the ability to operate bombers anywhere in the world. The operation was the first time that a B-2 stealth bomber has flown with Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-35s, according to a press release from PACAF. The US Air Force B-2 launched from Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley in Australia. Once the B-2 rendezvoused with the Japanese fighters, the "pilots conducted integration and aerial refueling operations," PACAF said. B-2s, normally stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, have been conducting Bomber Task Force missions for the past three weeks. Lt. Col. Justin Meyer, the 110th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron commander, said that "the opportunity to integrate our B-2 Spirit pilots with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force 5th generation aircraft is a significant milestone for our bilateral integration operations." "The advanced capabilities of these aircraft, combined with the strategic prowess of the B-2, enhance our collective readiness and interoperability. This collaboration not only strengthens our defense posture but also underscores our commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region," he added. Bomber Task Force operations are a priority for the US Air Force, as it seeks to demonstrate its capability and integrate its bomber aircraft, such as the stealth B-2 Spirit, supersonic B-1 Lancer, and B-52 Stratofortresses, into missions with US allies and partners. From August 31 to September 6, 2024, Allied Nations Germany and the United States joined Finland’s annual road base exercise Baana to conduct historic landings on highways. The Norvatie highway strip in Rovaniemi and the Hosio highway strip in Ranua, Finland, became the landing strip during exercise Baana 24, a Finnish-led annual exercise taking place outside main operating bases to increase expeditionary capability and dispersed operations drills. Main participants in Baana 24 were the Finnish Air Force’s F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets, Hawk jet trainers, as well as transport and liaison aircraft. Germany participated with Eurofighter jets and the United States with the F-35A enhancing both Allies’ Agile Combat Employment or ACE tactics, techniques and procedures. Germany deployed a limited support element with their Eurofighters to Finland and conducted operations from a normal highway for the first time. For two United States F-35A jets belonging to the 48th Fighter Wing stationed at Lakenheath, United Kingdom, it was also the first time to practice highway landings in Europe. After initial checks, the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron stepped in and conducted the first hot pit refueling of a U.S. Air Force F-35A on a highway in Europe. The presence of RAF Lakenheath F-35As training alongside Finnish Allies demonstrates that U.S. forces are fully prepared and postured to work seamlessly with NATO Allies and partners in the region to enhance the Alliance’s security. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gqq3FTUW

For the first time as NATO Allies, Danish F-35 and Swedish JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets flew aerial combat training drills in and around Danish airspace on March 11 and 13. The training missions showcased the close military cooperation between the Danish and Swedish air forces and also demonstrated efforts to integrate and interaction of different fighter jet generations across the Nordic countries. The drills were primarily conducted in separated training areas over the Kattegat waters. They consisted of one-to-one fighter manoeuvres and coordinated flying of Danish F-35s from Fighter Wing Skrydstrup and two JAS-39 Gripen from ‘Blekinge Flygflottilj’ at Ronneby near Karlskrona in southern Sweden. The cooperation is based on a mutual interest in the two nations across the Øresund making use of experience and competences in order to strengthen combined air warfare power. The training exercises involving the Swedish-produced JAS-39 and the American-produced F-35 underline the need to ensure existing and new combat aircraft fleets must be able to cooperate and interact on the modern battlefield. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gCrfhEdu

Ukraine 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗩𝟵𝟬 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 The Swedish-made CV90 infantry fighting vehicle has garnered high praise from Ukrainian soldiers for its exceptional performance and innovative features on the battlefield. Known for its robust armor and versatile armament, the CV90 has proven to be a formidable asset in Ukraine's military arsenal. According to the commander of the 21st Ukrainian mechanized brigade, the vehicle's armor has impressively withstood direct hits from a Lancet drone and a 120mm projectile, underscoring its resilience in combat situations. Since its introduction in 1994, the CV90 has seen action in various conflict zones, including Afghanistan and Liberia, under the United Nations mission. Its continued production reflects ongoing demand, with countries like the Czech Republic and Slovakia placing orders in recent years. The CV90's armament options range from a 40mm Bofors autocannon to 30mm or 35mm Bushmaster autocannons, and even a 120mm mortar, alongside a standard 7.62mm machine gun. Some variants are also equipped with grenade launchers or Spike LR missile launchers. Ukrainian forces are utilizing the CV90 equipped with 40mm Bofors autocannons, boasting a 407 kW engine that enables speeds of up to 70 km/h. The vehicle can accommodate a crew of three and transport 7-8 troops, making it an essential component of mechanized units. Ukraine's ambitious plan to acquire a thousand CV90s, with intentions for partial production within the country, signifies a strategic move towards NATO standards and the enhancement of its military capabilities. This decision, however, has sparked debate due to Ukraine's development of its infantry fighting vehicle. Nonetheless, the CV90's advanced protection level, comparable to the M2A2 Bradley, and its special Saab’s Barracuda camouflage system, which significantly reduces its visibility to thermal imaging cameras, have made it a valuable addition to Ukraine's defense efforts. The CV90's ability to blend into its surroundings, reducing visibility by approximately 70%, offers a tactical advantage, particularly in night operations or in conditions of poor visibility. This feature, along with its proven durability and firepower, highlights the CV90 as a critical component in the dynamics of modern warfare, embodying the multifaceted role of infantry fighting vehicles in supporting ground forces, executing medevac missions, and engaging enemy armor. #armoredvehicle #ifv
