IMHO re: Native planting: Here's the thing about not "doing it right." In spite of the fact that (in my opinion) the categorization of native species will certainly change as the planting zones warm up, (TBH, I do love that I can now plant things in my previously too-cold zone) we need to be cognizant of the fact that natural heritage preservation is more than plant selection and design. It's so much more than that. If conservation areas are not prioritized (AND interpreted), we risk: • loss of already shrinking habitats for millions of creatures • destruction of wildlife corridors which support key critters • water quality deterioration • scarcity of food sources for both prey and predators that can cause regional extinction • degraded air quality • reduction of property values • ability to attract and retain residents, businesses, and a quality workforce • decimation of legacy forests, prairies, fens, and pollinator support • devastation of local food sources • operational and financial sustainability • eligibility for crucial funding • loss of outdoor recreation opportunities • lack of immersive educational experiences that bolster prioritization of conservation Nature deserves better. We can all play a role because - yes, we must "do it right." Kudos to you, Scott Martin & City of Chattanooga!

🐦 A few weeks ago, my family and I attended a workshop on building birdhouses. The workshop was more than just about constructing the houses; it had a systemic rather than a linear flow. The workshop was hosted by a forest ranger and a carpenter, who taught the kids about birds, wood, and building houses with their hands. After the houses were done, we walked with the ranger to find suitable spots for the birdhouses. During the walk, the ranger shared information about the types of birds that would come and why we were making and hanging the birdhouses (lack of trees suitable for nests) and explained the importance of the distance between the birdhouses. All the birdhouses were numbered and then hung in trees. It was beautiful to see the kids' excitement! Days later, we got a document with all the birdhouses and their numbers so we could visit them! The follow-up course will take place in spring, and we will go with the ranger and check for birds, nests, and babies. A systemic workshop gives a holistic experience, starting from the basic house build to looking forward to visiting the birdhouses in spring. #lifecentereddesign #systemic #holistic
