It's always difficult to hear about colleagues and friends struggling at work, a situation that seems increasingly common, especially in the education sector. Teachers face growing pressures to perform while managing numerous tasks at work, even before considering their personal lives. To provide the best education for our children, educators need to be in a positive place both mentally and physically. They must feel supported by their colleagues and valued by their leadership. Many teachers inherently take on extra responsibilities because they genuinely want to help others. However, leaders must recognise that goodwill has its limits. The staff members who go the extra mile set the standard for their peers and encourage others to step up. While prioritising children's needs in decision-making in schools is crucial, what if staff well-being was also at the heart of leadership decisions? Wouldn't staff reciprocate by focusing more on pupil well-being and doing what is best for them? In a rapidly changing world, businesses and communication are evolving quickly, yet schools often lag behind. When I joined Danes Hill, I was disillusioned and uncertain about continuing my teaching career. A year later, I've rediscovered my love for education and am able to pursue my passion for supporting staff well-being. Fortunately, our leadership values open discussions and genuinely listens to staff. It's an exciting time to be part of this school, and I eagerly look forward to starting my second year in September.

As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I can't help but reflect on my time as a teacher and how much the landscape of education continues to change and evolve. Teaching isn't just about delivering lessons; it's about nurturing young minds, fostering creativity, and guiding future leaders. To all the teachers out there, I want to acknowledge the immense dedication and hard work you put in every day. Contrary to popular belief, summers off are often filled with planning, professional development, and preparing for the next school year. The workload is condensed into eight intense months that demand your expertise, empathy, and tireless commitment to student success. It's disheartening to see the current state of education in our country. We talk about the future citizens of America, yet we struggle to provide fair wages and support to those who shape these future leaders. The focus on test scores often overshadows the importance of holistic education, where students thrive not just academically but also as compassionate, curious, and resilient individuals. As we celebrate teachers this week, let's also reflect on how we can better support and uplift the education system. Our teachers deserve more than just appreciation; they deserve fair compensation, resources, and a system that prioritizes student well-being over standardized metrics. SEEKING SUCCESS - PART 3 Having read countless K-12 school district mission statements it is clear that most are cumbersome expressions of academic excellence which are often combined with an expectation for exceptional teaching effort. Rarely do they challenge the entire workforce to become mission focused. They do not enable everyone to see their role in setting the stage for student learning. Most of the time people cannot accurately repeat their district’s mission statement or speak to its day-to-day relevance. At the risk of being presumptive, I believe the mission of every K-12 school district can be stated in one sentence. “Each day we will create the right conditions for learning.” Every employee has a role to play in accomplishing this. The leadership team, Board, and community have the collective responsibility to determine their definition of “right” in relation to creating the conditions for their students to learn.

Education and training has been led for decades in most areas by the “band wagon” leadership approach. Wherever someone was getting funding, a plan was the popular one or someone was having success educators would jump on the bandwagon wagon of supporting it and possibly even use it whether it was appropriate for their situation or not. Now with the emphasis on skills training,, cte and career pathways the “band wagon” approach is being used by state leaders, highered, community colleges, politicians and policymakers. At Neway Works, our mission is to empower under-resourced student athletes through our after-school program, Project Transformation, fostering academic success, leadership skills, and whole life success through youth enrichment mentoring and development. Measurable Goals Include: 1. Increased High School Graduation Rates. Our goal is to achieve a 100% high school graduation rate among program participants within three years of program enrollment. 2. Post-Secondary Enrollment. We aim for 80% of program graduates to enroll in post-secondary education or vocational training programs within one year of high school graduation. 3. Employment Placement. Our objective is to secure employment for at least 70% of program participants within six months of completing their post-secondary education or vocational training. 4. Leadership Development. We strive for 60% of program participants to demonstrate leadership skills through active participation in community service projects or leadership roles within school or extracurricular activities. Our commitment to ongoing evaluation and feedback from program participants, staff, and #Community stakeholders ensures that we continuously adapt and improve Project Transformation to maximize the long-term impact on the lives of the youth we serve. Is Year-Round Schooling an Effective Measure Against Summer Learning Loss? According to the California Department of Education (2023), year-round education may positively affect student achievement, especially for disadvantaged students. Shorter, more frequent breaks minimize the loss of information retention during the summer months. Also, there are more enrichment opportunities for students during the breaks.
