This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. For various reasons including high-pressure environments, long days and the continuing stigma surrounding men’s mental health, the Construction Sector has some of the worst rates of mental health in the UK. Last year it was reported that: ◾ Male construction workers in the UK are almost four time more likely to die by suicide than the national average ◾ 700 people a year take their lives in construction-related suicides It is incredibly important for employers and individuals to know just how vital mental health awareness and support is. We would like to take the opportunity to share the measures that we have undertaken at Precon Products in the hope we can encourage others in the industry to follow suit: ◾ Mental Health First Aiders, with clear signage to show who they are ◾ An Employee Assistance Programme which provides access to specialist professionals who offer advice on stress, anxiety and a range of other issues ◾ Include Mental Health in inductions and health and safety management ◾ An open door policy which gives the workforce opportunity to get any worries and concerns off their chest in a safe space where they know they will be listened to Unfortunately, there is no quick solution to mental health, but we aim to continually take steps to improve the wellbeing of all our employees. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MentalHealthintheConstructionIndustry #MentalHealth #ConstructionIndustry

The workplace is a key setting to improve and support mental health. In mentally healthy workplaces with high levels of wellbeing, people watch out for each other and can ask someone if they’re ok. Managers and teams understand mental health and openly talk about it. Since October 2023, Dual have been active in enrolling our staff in a course covering ‘First Aid for Mental Health’ held by St. John’s. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from our team, with over 95% of our staff requesting to be involved. With organizations like Beyond Blue, MATES in Construction WA and St. John’s offering help and encouraging conversations about mental health, we will be in a better place to support ourselves and those around us, with self-care being equally important. Mental illness is now the leading cause of sickness absence and long-term work incapacity in Australia with nearly 1 in 5 people experiencing poor mental health each year. Nearly half of us will experience poor mental health during our lives. Life happens every day, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Today, we’re reminded to Ask R U OK? Any Day—checking in on each other should be part of our daily routine, particularly in our industry where suicide is the single biggest killer of the workforce. Mental health and suicide prevention are just as important as physical job safety. Let’s make an effort to ask, "R U OK?" not just today but whenever you think someone may be struggling. SHAPE is committed to improving mental health in our industry, normalising conversations, and ensuring people receive the support they need. To achieve this, we work closely with MATES in Construction (MIC) across ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, and with Incolink's Bluehats in VIC and TAS all year round. Additionally, all SHAPE leaders have completed the Mental Health First Aid Seminar for Leaders. To support this day and raise awareness, our branches across Australia held morning teas and lunches to provide the chance for our people to foster conversations. We also provided R U OK? KitKat’s to share a treat and meaningful discussions, and conducted site visits with our partner and industry professionals, Bluehats. Remember, it’s always the right time to ask, "R U OK?" 🚒 Supporting Our First Responders: A Big Step Forward 🚒 Today, as we celebrate Ontario's First Responder Day, I want to say a huge thank you to all the first responders here in Ontario, across Canada, and around the world. You all do so much for us, often dealing with tough situations that can really impact your mental health. It's awesome to see Manitoba stepping up by providing three mental health workers just for first responders. This is an important move to help those who help us daily. But we can't stop here. There are over 250,000 first responders in Canada, and we need to ensure that mental health support is available for all of them, not just in Manitoba but everywhere, especially in Ontario, on such an important day like today. As we honour our first responders' bravery and hard work, let’s also push for the mental health support they need to keep doing their jobs without sacrificing their well-being. Let's get the conversation going about making mental health support as available as the communities our first responders serve. I’ve been pretty quiet on LinkedIn recently. Pretty quiet on social media all round if I’m totally honest. I guess things in life make you question stuff. I for one have had a stressful year, Family heath issues have had an impact as well as other issues in life. Since completing my mental heath first aid training it really opened my eyes to things around us. Whether if someone’s being extra quiet, choosing to work from home more, getting agitated, or even masking with a joke, we’ve all got our mental demons that affect us. Mental health is no laughing matter, we can’t just brush it aside and think they’ll just get better. In the old days I’d get bad feedback on jobs, fail exams, get rejected on the dating front when I was still a singleton etc. that got me to develop a thick skin. Which back then you needed to as the awareness wasn’t there. These days we have tools available, whether online councillors, whether coping mechanisms and apps such as headspace, whether speaking to your doctor. We also have more awareness that how things were was not good enough, we have big advocates with celebrities going public on mental heath to help highlight the issues. Sometimes all you need to do is lend an ear, don’t just hear them, but listen to them and you’ll be surprised how you can help someone, even yourself. So to quote Great Western Railway “If you see something that doesn’t look right, see it, say it, sorted” ! #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthsupport #headspace #greatwesternrailway #mhfa
