The Olympic Games started in Greece around 776 BC. They were part of a cycle, celebrating human athletic achievement as a tribute to the Olympian gods. There were a series of games, each held on a 4-year rotation. The Olympic Games were held in honor of Zeus, near his sanctuary of Olympia on the Peloponnese. These were the games that the modern Olympics looked to for inspiration when they started in 1896. The Pythian Games were held at Delphi, on the slope of Mt. Parnassus, in honor of the god Apollo, whose shrine and oracle gave advice to travelers from all over the Greek world and beyond. The Isthmian Games, held at Corinth in honor of the sea god Poseidon, close to the small strip of land that connected the Peloponnese to the rest of the mainland. These games were particularly favored by the Athenians. The Nemean Games were also in honor of Zeus, and held near the site where his favored son, Herakles, was said to kill the Nemean Lion, a ferocious best whose pelt the hero wore from that point forward. There was another set of games - the Heraean Games, in honor of Zeus's wife Hera, and had the unusual element of that all the competitors were girls and young women - specifically showing their athletic abilities to recognize Hera's dominance as queen of the Olympians. With that legacy, and the century-long history of the modern Olympic Games, the city of Athens hosted the games in 2004. It was a watershed year for Athens, and for all of Greece. It's hard to overemphasize just how transformative the work that went into hosting the games, and the years leading up to it, were. Massive infrastructure projects - and spending - happened at an equally massive scale. Many point to that as the arrival of Athens on the world stage as a truly international city - along with New York, London, Paris, or Hong Kong. Those who traveled to Greece in the years before the Games saw a city reinvent itself. The area around the acropolis, and especially the long stately promenade leading to the Plaka neighborhood is a good example of how the Greeks to a singular opportunity to build up their country. All of this transformational spending was happening just a couple years after the advent of the euro as the European common currency, replacing the drachma - a truly ancient unit of money. This would come to have great ramifications for Greece later. But, the construction around Greece - renovations of archaeological sites, modernization of the highway and rail system, a huge bridge spanning the Corinthian Gulf - it was all part of Greece's reawakening in many ways. Even now, many Greeks look to the 2004 Games not as a moment in time, but an announcement that modern Greece had arrived - honoring its past, but looking to a bright future. One of the most enduring images of those Games was the narrative visual imagery of the opening ceremony - a living tableau of Greek history from the ancients to the present. https://lnkd.in/ewSb9Nf6

The medals of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 have been unveiled! Whether they are gold, silver or bronze, they will all contain a very special piece of metal that was once part of the Eiffel Tower. Cut into a hexagon, the geometric shape evokes France to the point of becoming its nickname. Also on the same side, thin lines are projected at irregular intervals all around the iron hexagon. Struck rather than engraved, these rays bring relief and shine to a medal that is far from smooth. More information here https://lnkd.in/eRZn98tR Following this announcement, let’s have a look at the medals of the previous editions, thanks to our OSC Reference Document on Olympic Summer Games medals. Available on the Olympic World Library here https://lnkd.in/eRaBMEbv, you will discover each medal, illustrated by a photo of its obverse and reverse, and with a description of the design and the technical details. This document is part of our OSC Reference Collection, accessible here https://lnkd.in/eQ5mkNqV. As the Olympic Games are being held this year in Paris, I thought it would be interesting to explore how the Olympians earn their chance at gold, silver, or bronze. It turns out that, just like in the world of finance, the path to the Olympics is paved with strategic planning, diligent effort, and a fair bit of competitive spirit. Paris 2024 Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be held from 26 July to 11 August of this year and will include Aquatics, Athletics, and Boxing. New categories like breaking (as in break-dancing, I kid you not) will grace the games, as over 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries compete in 306 medal events. The Right Stuff? When it comes to qualifying, each sport has a different metric by which they judge. Some are based on individual performances, others on the collective strength of national teams. Sports like shooting and taekwondo offer quotas for places earned by individual athletes, which helps prevent a small number of countries from dominating any event. However, even then, the final say on who fills those quota places lies with the athlete's respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Dream Teams In team sports, nations secure their spots through performances in World Championships, continental competitions, or global qualifiers. This rigorous selection process ensures only the highest-performing athletes represent their countries on the international stage, making each event a (hopefully) thrilling spectacle of skill and sportsmanship. Talk about inspiring! The dedication, coordination, and grit needed to arrive at this global stage is just "awesome" in every sense. Olympics.com, 2024
