Kazakhstan partnering with ICAO on Sustainable Aviation Fuels On 13 May 2024, with the signature by H.E Talgat Lastaev, Vice-Minister of Transport, of the ACT-SAF terms of reference, #Kazakhstan became the first State in the CIS to join this key programme of the International Civil Aviation Organization. By doing so, Kazakhstan will benefit from assistance, capacity building and training to scale up the production and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). This is an important step showing the State’s commitment towards the sustainable development of aviation. This will in turn yield significant benefits for the sustainable socio-economic development of this landlocked, fast-growing country.

Emirates has become the first international airline to join The Solent Cluster. The Solent Cluster is a cross-sector collaboration of international organisations, including manufacturers and engineering companies, regional businesses and industries, leading logistics and infrastructure operators and academic institutions. Emirates joins over 100 members as part of the Cluster, alongside founding members the Solent Partners (previously the Solent LEP), global energy provider ExxonMobil and University of Southampton. The founding members have each shared details of their vision for the Solent and how it could secure existing jobs and produce low-carbon fuels for a variety of sectors, including aviation. Very good to see Norwegian taking its responsibility. Not only to influence the aspects in which they are involved directly, like aircrafts that are more efficient, training of pilots/captains to fly more efficient, but especially because they also take their responsibility to invest in the production capacity of eSAF. As Kristoffer Gustavsen indicates, Norwegian is investing in the eSAF plant of Norsk e-Fuel which is going to convert green H2 (which can be produced cheap in North Norway due to continuous available renewable electricity and local conditions - hydro, wind) and biogenic CO2 into eSAF. At TNO / VoltaChem, where I was commercial responsible for the development of next generation SOEC, I have been working in research & applied science projects (related to SOEC) together with Norsk e-Fuel. It is a great company with people that really understand the technologies that are going to be deployed in the plants and which also do have a view/approach on how the production facilities of the future will look like. I think this technology mindset is important. For this reason, I think that Norsk e-Fuel, together with Arcadia eFuels from Denmark which do have a similar mindset, will be among the leaders in the future eSAF production domain. 🚄✈️ Exploring Cross-Sector Knowledge Exchange: UIC – EUROCONTROL Workshop Yesterday, a dynamic workshop, coordinated by Parinaz Bazeghi took place at UIC HQ, focusing on the exchange of technical knowledge across different sectors. Attended by representatives from Swiss railways CFF, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, CFL cargo, RailNetEurope (RNE), Slovenske železnice and #UICrail experts, the event provided a platform to dive into the Aviation communication rules and principles. Joost OVERDIJKINK, Martin Polák 🔎 Gabor Petnehazy and Stefan Oze from EUROCONTROL led the workshop, offering a comprehensive introduction and historical overview of EUROCONTROL. Their presentations shed light on the global air traffic situation, emphasizing EUROCONTROL’S pivotal role as the Air Traffic Network Manager for all of Europe. The duo also goes deeper into the details of aviation phraseology, covering approximately 400 words. They navigated through air traffic control's fundamental rules and obligations, as well as safety aspects, offering valuable insights into the digital tools and technology supporting these operations. 👉 Participants had the opportunity to engage in an interactive brainstorming session towards the day's end. The CAAC - Civil Aviation Administration of China has unveiled a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technical centre in Chengdu, aimed at setting standards and advancing research and development in the sector. This initiative will bolster quality control and promote the usage of green jet fuel across China. China is poised to become a leading SAF producer in the Asia-Pacific region, with private firms investing over $1 billion in new projects nationwide. The country is already a major exporter of used cooking oil and other raw materials essential for SAF production, primarily serving markets in the EU and US. The establishment of the SAF technical centre signifies China's commitment to sustainable aviation and its role in shaping the future of green fuel. 𝗦𝗦𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 2024 marks 50 years since the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was adopted. The SOLAS is the main and most important international treaty concerning the safety of merchant ships. This year's World Maritime Day theme "Navigating the Future: Safety First" highlights the implications of safety reguations surrounding the use of alternative fuels. As the industry moves towards a greater level of decarbonization, it is also important to reflect on the training needs of our seafarers to enable them to use these new technologies and fuels safely. Our technical committee chair, Ms Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, shares her insights on the development and regulations of zero-carbon alternative fuels. Some interesting developments in SAF over the past week that are worth noting: 1. 🇸🇪 SkyNRG and Skellefteå Kraft have partnered on Project SkyKraft, pioneering eSAF production from renewable electricity and biogenic CO2 in Northern Sweden. https://lnkd.in/dSiBkw3T 2. 🇺🇸 Summit Next Gen announced plans for the world's largest ethanol-to-jet SAF facility in Texas, aiming for 250 million gallons annually. 3. 🇧🇷 HIF Global signed a land reservation contract with Port of Açu to develop an e-methanol facility producing up to 800,000 tons per year. (More on HIF by Dirk Singer: https://lnkd.in/dew7MB5e) 4. 🇯🇵 Neste, ITOCHU Corporation, and GS Caltex are bringing the first CORSIA-eligible, ISCC-certified SAF to Narita International Airport Corporation, ahead of CORSIA's 2027 mandatory phase. 5. 🇨🇳 China has launched a SAF pilot program with 12 flights from three major airlines, set to expand throughout 2025. However, even some of the "right" moves are tinged with some disappointments. 🇮🇩 Indonesia's announcement of a 1% SAF requirement for international flights by 2027 falls short of ambitious targets. More concerning is the focus on (rather controversial) used cooking oil and palm fatty acid distillate as primary feedstocks. https://lnkd.in/dyNkcupY So while these developments highlight the industry's supposed commitment to SAF, they also underscore the need for careful consideration of feedstock sustainability and more ambitious targets.
