Hydrogen's outlook has dimmed due to slower development in the sector and increasing costs, impacting its viability in transportation and household applications. However, a narrower focus on making hydrogen fit-for-purpose may benefit the industry. Heavy industry decarbonization offers promising opportunities for hydrogen use. Investment in hydrogen development should prioritize industrial applications, such as fertilizer production, and contribute to global emissions reduction efforts. As the global economy prepares for an energy transition that will change the future of #energy landscapes, new alternative fuels are coming to the fore. Hydrogen has been gaining traction as a clean alternative fuel as it only emits water upon combustion. However, there are a number of inherent challenges with the production, handling, and consumption of #hydrogen with the state of technology today. It is still expensive to produce clean hydrogen from #renewable sources. As a gas, hydrogen also requires capital-intensive infrastructure for its storage and transport. #Methanol is tomorrow’s hydrogen, today. It is an extremely efficient hydrogen carrier, packing more hydrogen in one simple alcohol molecule than can be found in hydrogen. Being a liquid at ambient conditions, methanol can be handled, stored, and transported with ease by leveraging existing infrastructure that supports the global trade of methanol. Methanol reformers are able to generate on-demand hydrogen at the point of use to avoid the complexity and high cost associated with the logistics of hydrogen as a fuel. Methanol can also be produced from sustainable and green pathways to allow it to be a carrier of low carbon, and potentially carbon-neutral, hydrogen. 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿: 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗛𝗚 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 by Satu Lipiäinen, Jani Sillman, Esa Vakkilainen, Risto Soukka, Mari Tuomaala The planned #steelindustry shift from fossil-based production to low carbon alternatives will require millions of tons of #hydrogen. Hydrogen delivery to large users calls for building of new #infrastructures. This #study analyses five different hydrogen delivery #pathways including; 🟢 mill-site electrolysis, 🟢 pipeline transport of hydrogen in new and 🟢 repurposed pipelines, 🟢 pipeline transport of synthetic methane, and 🟢 shipping of various products. #Costs, #energyefficiency, and greenhouse gas (#GHG) #emissions are evaluated using a #steelmill consuming 144 kt of hydrogen as an example. The results suggest that mill-site electrolysis and both the hydrogen pipeline transport alternative seemed to be the best performers among the studied cases. Pipeline transport of #syntheticmethane and shipping have around 130 % and 40 % higher costs in comparison to mill-site hydrogen production and pipeline transport of hydrogen. Their energy #efficiencies were the least appealing. Greenhouse gas emissions of the studied cases varies between 7.7 and 13.7 kg CO2-eq /kg H2 . The synthetic methane could provide a significant #carbonsink, if only #renewables are utilized in hydrogen production, but due to high cost and poor #energy efficiency it can still be regarded as an unfeasible route. It can be concluded that there are notable differences between transport options, and significant uncertainties on how large-scale hydrogen demand should be handled exist. The large-scale #production and #transport of hydrogen include several #uncertainties regarding technical performance and costs. Many of the needed #technologies such as large-scale hydrogen compressors are not yet implemented in a required scale, which can still lead to unexpected #challenges and additional costs. Comparison of different transport options is possible, but providing accurate estimates for costs, efficiency or GHG emissions is impossible at this point of development. Hydrogen gas itself is colorless, but in the context of hydrogen energy, different "colors" are used to describe various methods of hydrogen production, each with distinct environmental impacts. ⚫️Gray Hydrogen - Produced from natural gas (methane) via steam methane reforming (SMR). This process emits carbon dioxide, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. 🔵Blue Hydrogen - Also derived from natural gas, but with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to reduce CO2 emissions. This process captures the majority of the CO2 emitted, making it more environmentally friendly than gray hydrogen. 🟢Green Hydrogen - Produced using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, or hydropower to electrolyze water (split water into hydrogen and oxygen). This process has no direct carbon emissions, making it the most environmentally sustainable method. 🟤Brown Hydrogen - Created from coal through a process like gasification. This method releases large amounts of CO2 and other pollutants, making it the least environmentally friendly. ⚫️Black Hydrogen - Similar to brown hydrogen, but explicitly refers to hydrogen produced from black coal, with similar environmental impacts. Turquoise Hydrogen: - Produced through methane pyrolysis, which separates methane into solid carbon and hydrogen. If the solid carbon is captured and used or stored, this process can be more environmentally friendly. It is still in the early stages of development compared to blue and green hydrogen. These "colors" are metaphorical labels that help categorize hydrogen production methods by their environmental impact and underlying technology. 🌱 Embracing a low-carbon future: accelerating decarbonized #hydrogen adoption 🌍 💡 To accelerate the adoption of low-carbon hydrogen, industries need supportive policies and mechanisms.
