“Don’t believe the hype.” -Public Enemy Last month we were shortlisted for the Best Places to Work Awards and now we’ve been accredited for Culture 100, NZ’s Greatest Companies To Work for. However, don’t always believe the hype. This quarter our focus is on rebooting our ‘Journey operating system’, rethinking and redesigning how we run our business and deliver work. Why? Because we have more than our share of challenges right now. Because not every process is fit for purpose anymore. Not every mindset we’ve adopted is still useful. This week Grads of Life hosted an interactive discussion with cross-sector leaders on the value and ROI of skills-first talent practices. Insights centered on: 1) Buy-in for skills-first transformation cannot just be at the C-suite (whether CHRO/CDO/CEO) but across the top/bottom and all levels of the organization. 2) To have skills-first commitments move to action – ROI metrics and stories must be tailored to change agents across the organization. Hiring managers are the critical unlock - messaging needs to focus on what helps them be successful such as increased productivity with skills-first hiring, and cost savings of reduced turnover and internal mobility. 3) What GOL has been advocating for years - hiring managers, HR, etc. - those doing the work every day - need support, tools, and the space to discuss their concerns and hopes! Happy Friday! June is a great month for reflection, especially here at THCG as it also marks the end of our financial year AND our birthday (on the 26th June, if anyone wants to send cake... #justsaying!) As we enter 2024 refreshed and rejuvenated after a well deserved festive break. I would be remiss not to reflect on the many challenges and successes of 2023. After a year of incredible highs and unprecedented growth, how do you top that? 1. Continue to build team confidence and encourage risk taking - “the greatest lessons are learnt from failure” 2. Strengthening people and engagement - “when individuals build trust with one another, the team will function more cohesively” 3. Enhancing team communication for overall results - “with powerful team communication skills and the team’s collective resources, obstacles can be overcome and projects can progress forward” 4. Cultivate accountability and team leadership - “doing what you said you were going to do, when you said you would do it” Applying these principles were crucial for success on a business and personal level. I look forward to continued growth in their application in 2024 and taking “the beauty that moves the world” and “mission 3X” to a new level. PURPOSEFEST Yesterday was inspiring. Purposefest brings B-Corps and adjacent businesses from Bristol and across the country together with the purpose to, as main organiser and Mr. B-Corp himself, Andy Hawkins put it: to do business better. All the people I met are optimistic, open minded leaders who want to leave a positive legacy on the world through strong modern businesses. Profit and purpose can (and must!) be aligned. B-Corp certification requires consideration of a broad range of business areas from sustainability to governance to transparency to reporting. It's a values-based business transformation that requires buy-in and participation at all levels! We were reminded many times that our businesses and our careers are a journey, not a destination! And every step along the journey makes us a little bit better. Apparently, of the over 8000 certified B-Corps worldwide, more than 1000 are in Bristol alone. I am excited to work with values-driven companies like these to help them align their teams and build a community behind a common purpose, whether that is working towards B-Corp certification or their business' mission.
