Affordable housing and vibrant greenery—can we have both? 🏠️🌳 Our urban forests are more than just green spaces; they're the heart of our community. That's why the City of Bellingham has recently released a draft Urban Forestry Management Plan (UFMP) to protect and nurture our urban canopy while addressing our city's housing needs. Bellingham's current canopy cover sits at 40%, but with projected growth, we aim for a No Net Loss scenario, which means doubling our tree planting efforts and implementing measures to protect existing trees. As we strive for a greener future, we must find middle ground between conservation and development. This means exploring creative strategies like vertical growth and targeted planting to maximize space without sacrificing our trees. The Isle of Wight Council is about to be taken to a judicial review hearing for their handling of Ridge Clean Energy’s solar development application on behalf of Briddlesford Dairy Farm. The solar farm will envelope one of Britain’s rarest ancient woodlands in glass panels from all sides with a mere 15 metre buffer zone which the trees adjacent to the development eclipse in size. Without a fire break or adequate mitigation this solar farm will remove a hundred acres of habitat from being foraged by a collection of the rarest bats in Britain. Bechstein’s bats, grey long ear bats and Barbestelles are all present on site, including dormice, red squirrels, chaffweed, natterjack toad etc. The site of the solar farm is ancient wood pasture and historic parkland and BMV. The impacts of solar development are already well known to this woodland as it is currently being deforested by another solar farm next door! Representation have been made by the Forestry Commission and Natural England, these comments have been entirely ignored by the council and developer alike. Representations made to the tree officer were passed up to the head of planning who dismissed comments and subsequently left the council to work for the developers land agent. Esteemed colleagues and I have been fighting this development for nearly three years and we relish the opportunity to take this decision to JR. What we do not enjoy is how the council have allowed a developer to ride roughshod over the NPPF and Island Strategy. The result is that the council will likely lose a JR hearing, reimburse our costs leaving the tax payer out of pocket. I don't normally read newspaper articles about #rewilding, but I gave this one a try. Like most, it stretches the truth quite a bit... Wild Card have indeed been campaigning for the royals to rewild their land for a while now. That's great. But it's odd that they claim a beaver reintroduction as a win for the campaign. This is a project run by The Wildlife Trusts on land owned by The Crown Estate - and the Trusts have spent the last few years campaigning hard for the benefits of rewilding, or 'wilding' as they prefer to call it. The Beaver Trust has also been tirelessly raising awareness of the benefits of these animals for restoring rivers in recent years. Wild Card also claims that the plan to expand Wistman's Wood (a temperate rainforest on Dartmoor) is their own victory. But in the same article they namecheck Guy Shrubsole, whose recent research into the past extent of this habitat, and book on the issue, have done more to push this issue into the national consciousness than any campaign. In fact, there are other forces at work here, too, including the dawning realisation that these forests are good for carbon capture. Aviva and similar large organisations are pumping huge amounts of investment into the acquisition of land for restoration of temperate rainforests right now. This helps to offset their climate impact. The increase in land value and offset potential of this habitat alone would surely be a higher incentive than a bit of minor public pressure? Then there's this sentence, which just seems to massively misunderstand what rewilding means: "And now, the unthinkable: even the king’s beloved Balmoral, once a bastion of bloodsports, is set to get its first rewilding project." In the context of degraded Scottish moors like Balmoral, hunting is an essential part of the rewilding process (in the absence of wolves and lynx). Over in the Cairngorms, they've seen a huge recovery in their ecosystems in recent years... Why? Because they stepped up hunting, or 'culling' as conservationists prefer to call it, by a huge amount, for a limited period. This cut the deer population back to natural levels. But when this level was reached, hunting (culling) had to be maintained at a low level to keep the populations in check. As a result, there was a massive recovery of woodland and biodiversity. Rewilding is a group effort - there is no single organisation which can claim responsibility for the progress which is being made here. While The Crown Estate have managed land poorly in the past, they're not alone in this, and they aren't cartoon villains. Approaching them with evidence-based arguments for the genuine value of natural capital is working - for them and landowners at large. Let's celebrate the achievements when they happen, but it's always worth being a little skeptical when reading about it in the press... https://lnkd.in/ee9mJPxn #ecology #conservation

Growing up in nature and then watching its decimination over the last 30yrs in my working life is heartbreaking. I think we’re suffering as a species quite simply because of our detachment from the natural environment. We know we feel better when we’re in it & when we look after it, yet here we are with 3% left across the board from just 100yrs ago. We’ve been led to eat it, spray it, shoot it, skin it, cull it but not live with it and protect it with our lives. I’m not saying there aren’t incredible people doing extraordinary things to help nature thrive but it’s an effort that needs addressing on a larger scale and it can all start in the garden. I’ve invested 30+yrs in construction with the notion of building homes not houses, I’ve researched how creating the right environment during the building process creates the best place for a family to thrive once the build is completed. Sowing and maintaining Wild flower meadows, hedgerows and planting organic vegetables has proven in our research that everyone benifits, from the nature, the workforce, the quality of the build and family life.
