It's good to be in Amsterdam and it's great to be in the company of people who share a concern for good management and leadership in universities. Three days of imagining, capturing, networking, reflecting. In one word: learning. Tomorrow, stress levels will be rising to just the perfect level for the workshop Marjolijn De Clercq and I will be giving (and receiving). We'll cover topics such as: university transformation, collaboration, learning environments, psychological safety. Key outcomes to follow! https://lnkd.in/eFNDdCNS

‘The problem is that ‘buy-in’ is not really collaborative – it simply involves ‘buying-in’ to some kind of predetermined set of actions that someone else has taken, and that usually have an impact on everyone else. It’s consensual at best; underhanded at worst.’ This is a quote I really like from a great piece by Phil Stock (linked in the post below) on implementing change in schools and I think could be relevant to many organisations. The piece itself takes as its starting point that ‘People, ultimately, value what they feel part of’, which is itself a line from a new EEF report. Unlike previous guidance, this report emphasizes the social dimension of implementation, advocating for genuine engagement over mere ‘buy-in.’ The updated recommendations streamline the process into three key areas: adopting effective behaviours, attending to contextual factors, and using a structured yet flexible implementation process. The approach underlines that while context matters, people matter more. Engaging staff means more than gaining agreement; it’s about active, genuine involvement in shaping the school’s direction. Schools that foster this collaborative culture are not only more successful but also better places to work.
💡 “A school that values its staff and involves them in its decision-making, is likely to get good results and be a great place to work.” Phil Stock of Greenshaw Research School explores the importance of involving all staff in implementation. Read more: https://ow.ly/Ae2o50RJWlT

A clear and concise strategy for creating new knowledge with creative industries at its core. And one that’s that’s entirely achievable.
Norwich University of the Arts is establishing two new institutes - our Institute for Creative Technology is led by Kirk Woolford, and we will soon announce the Director of our Institute for Sustainable Worlds. These two institutes are key elements of our Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy, and how we will engage with local, regional and international priorities and partners.

Walter Copan, Vice President of Mines Office of Research & Technology Transfer represented Colorado School of Mines at the recent Future of Challenge-Driven Partnerships conference at University of Cambridge. The conference focused on answering the question, “What needs to be done to enable multi-stakeholder partnerships involving universities to significantly accelerate the development of breakthrough innovations aimed at tackling urgent and complex grand challenges?” This is a timely and important question because many current and emerging challenge-focused initiatives are large-scale and require teams that include academic, government, and industry collaboration to take on the world’s critical challenges. #InnovationWithImpact

How can we experiment with Transformative Innovation Policy to find new and better ways of contributing to a #GreenTransition? TIPC’s Christoph Brodnik (Monash Sustainable Development Institute, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology) shares six practical recommendations in a recent European Commission policy brief. These recommendations aim to improve European research and innovation policy making by incorporating theoretical and practical perspectives of TIP informed policy experimentation. 1. Incorporate TIP-informed experiments at different stages of the policy cycle 2. Develop more purposeful policy experiments that initiate and organise change processes and empower a wide range of actors 3. Address culture by strengthening competencies and organisational routines for experimentation and learning 4. Use formative evaluation to enhance reflexivity and learning, and embed this in the design of policy experiments 5. Adopt a portfolio perspective to better assess the systemic effects of interventions on change process 6. Experiment with adaptive governance approaches, including the orchestration of actors and resources across different sectors The policy brief draws on lessons from programmes by a number of agencies including Vinnova and its Challenge Driven Innovation Programme. Today was Day 2 of the Leeds Beckett University Business School Conference; and for the final session of the day we heard from Natalie Allen and Jo Griffiths all about Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. What is it ❓ A Government-funded programme helping businesses develop and gain a competitive advantage with the expertise of UK universities. How does it work ❓ Each KTP creates a unique partnership between a business and a university to deliver positive impact and drive innovation. Every project is tailor-made for your business. Who funds it ❓ The programme, funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through Innovate UK KTN has been running for over 45 years. During that time, it has enabled more than 14,000 businesses to drive innovation for positive impact. What else does it offer ❓ The KTP programme is complemented by the Management KTP Programme (mKTP), focused on helping businesses build resilience, adaptability and growth by changing culture or expanding management capability.
