From the looks of this video, it seems to me that this really big #corporation is providing experience to their #Interns AND at WORTHYfutures I teach them more effective ways to put together a presentation, minus the ping-pong. Here is a tip for all of you when presenting, set out your pitch like a story arc, accentuating the negative and positive stages for maximum drama. · Problem: what needs fixing right now (negative) · Opportunity: also available to us now (positive) · Practical Steps: if we do this, it won’t be easy (negative) · Promise: but if we get it right, it will be great (positive) Mateo Hernandez Jimmy Sevilla Jordan Fon Sing Akari Zhang Brandon De Fusco

Whew, where to start?... My year-long internship with Gorilla 76 ended a couple of weeks ago, and with graduation wrapping up last week, I’ve been able to reflect a bit more on this past year. And here’s what I’ve been thinking about: 1️⃣ G76 has set a HIGH bar. With rockstar teammates, a company culture with core values that are practiced and celebrated every day, an HR department that actually cares, and so much more, this first marketing experience of mine has set the standard for the rest of my career. 2️⃣ I’ve learned so much this past year It was hard to reflect on my improvement when I was in the thick of it, but it’s been a lot easier to look back on it all these past two weeks. From barely knowing anything about marketing to getting comfortable within a media buying role, I’m extremely grateful for the trust and teaching of SO many of the Gorillas who helped me get there. Nobody is less than an expert, and they’re all smart cookies. But most importantly, they were patient and kind enough to spend the time needed to get me where I am now. The moral of the story: find amazing teammates and teachers. 3️⃣ The people make the company Answering “the people” to your favorite part about the job sounds cliche, but there’s a reason it’s such a common answer. From whatever aspect, whether it’s talent, kindness, collaboration, etc, it really is the people who make Gorilla an amazing company and made this past internship such a wonderful experience. - P.S. On a final note, I’ll be setting up a Calendly around mid-June, and I would love to meet and connect with any marketers who’d be willing to share their experiences and roles. That way, I can continue to learn and meet some cool people:) So, keep an eye out for another post around then!

As I complete my 10th week of my Global People Internship at Walmart, I am grateful to have had abundant opportunities and incredible experiences. One of my most impactful experiences was a tour of Walmart Store 5260 that I embarked on with my fellow Global People Interns. This tour not only broadened my understanding of my project but also offered several key takeaways: 1. The importance of inclusion Did you know Walmart offers a sensory friendly environment during the hours of 8 AM to 10 AM in all Walmart U.S. and Puerto Rico store locations? This is to provide an optimal experience for all customers, regardless of their needs. This is just one of the many displays of “service to the customer” I witnessed while touring Store 5260. 2. The power of associate ownership Walmart is actively involved in giving back to communities, and I got to discover how Store 5260 encourages their associates to take ownership of fundraising initiatives. Store 5260 decided to take on the challenge of raising money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in many creative ways, such as selling snacks and t-shirts next to the breakroom. It was such a unique way to learn about how associates can play a direct role in supporting their community. 3. The value of growth opportunities The leadership board stood out to me on the tour. The board has associates' faces on the wall to display the store hierarchy, helping to put names to faces, and showing associates what their next growth opportunity at Walmart might be. What was most impactful about the board was when Store Manager, Carlie Dodge highlighted that almost every person in a leadership role on that board had been recently promoted, and that the leadership team reflects the diverse community they serve. This is a great example of how associates can see leadership from people who look like them and recognize potential roles they can grow into, all while encouraging associates to “strive for excellence.” Of course, a special shout-out to Matt Meyers, Ph.D. for putting this internship experience together, and Cody Katzer for giving insight into the customer and associate experience. Witnessing these initiatives firsthand has truly reinforced my admiration for Walmart’s commitment to inclusivity and community support.

Today I had the opportunity to spend some time with the TIAA interns. Engaging with and learning from this next generation of marketers and leaders brings me so much joy. Their energy, fresh perspective and passion for growth is inspiring. I shared some of my lessons learned throughout my career to date, including: - The best marketers are endlessly curious. About their customer, their category, their competition, and their craft. - Observe the leaders around you - what traits do you want to emulate and more importantly, which do you never want to exhibit. Use that information to formulate the kind of leader you want to be. - Careers are like a wall of lego blocks. If you stack every block one on top of the other, you won't build a strong wall. If you put some side by side, sometimes overlapping, you build the strongest wall. Think of each career opportunity as the next lego block in your career wall. - Be intentional about building your personal brand. Build it around your unique superpowers. Nurture it and protect it. I am excited for their internship at TIAA this summer to be one of the formative lego blocks in their career wall.

Reflecting on my first week in the corporate world, here are a few things I wish I had known before starting my internship. 1. It is important to understand the business model of the company you are working at. For example, I learned that in a retail company a lot of the financial work and data has to do with suppliers, inventory, etc. 2. I already knew that I would use Excel but I didn’t know to what extent. And to my surprise, majority of the work is done on a spreadsheet so I would need to be extra proficient in using the software. 3. Everything requires extreme attention to detail. One small error can lead to significant issues. I remember I entered 54 instead of 45 and it resulted in the total not balancing and I could not account for the P9 variance. After checking multiple times I realized that it was all because I made the slighest error. Overall, I had a fantastic week, largely thanks to the supportive work environment. My colleagues were incredibly welcoming and took the time to greet me and inquire about my well-being, regardless of them working in a different department or me being significantly younger than them. Their genuine interest in my growth and comfort made it easy for me to feel at ease. I'm excited to see what the coming weeks have in store for me. 🥰 What is something you learnt from your first week?

One more day until my Lyft internship is complete! So, I want to share a few reflections. Being the first in my family to achieve several post-secondary educational milestones has often felt like a choose-your-own-adventure storybook. And, the majority of times, I have had no idea what I was doing. However, I’ve always been driven by my personal mission and values to do good. Two years ago, I began asking myself what I wanted to do after my PhD and stumbled upon UX research. With my 10+ years of research experience, I grew curious as to how I could transfer my skills into user experience and tech products. As a medical/sociocultural anthropologist, it is undeniable how tech is part of our culture and touches every part of our lives in every single way. Like the researcher that I am, I learned more about UXR and grew my UXR network (s/o to the many people that shared 30 mins of their time with me!) Fast forward to today and I can honestly say that these past twelve weeks as the only UXR Lyft intern have been transformative for my UX research experience. What once was theory, became practice. I was able to: -conduct end-to-end research -host research read-outs with stakeholders -practice multiple research methods And so much more! I complete my Lyft internship with gratitude to have collaborated with so many wonderful people doing incredible work. Many many many thanks to Sabrina Papazian, PhD, Meghan Wenzel, Anne Cormia, Rafae Aziz, Artin Yip, and so many others who have shaped my Lyftern experience. I hope my feature is helpful to other grad students in the social sciences interested in industry careers. Now to focus on finishing this dissertation! #Lyft #UXR #intern #UXRinternship #PhD
