This week I have lived examples of where technology needs context and testing with humans. Apple's newer animated reactions based on human gestures. Once a colleague was animatedly talking about something they were upset about, and counting off items on their fingers. When they got to 2, a big happy peace wallpaper popped in the background. Definite mismatch with the mood. Then yesterday another colleague in Israel was telling me about their situation and made a directional gesture while talking about how people in different regions have more or less warning time to get to a shelter, and a big thumbs up/like bubble appeared. Just real life examples of how when technology isn't situationally appropriate, isn't hitting the right tone, it can be offputting. It also shows how automations need the option for people to train the behaviors and let it know if it was appropriate or not, so it can learn and do better. #userexperience #trainingai Edited because I blamed google when it was an apple feature. 😊

Here’s what I think is really interesting about the post below by Jim Fan: Apple’s multimodal vision-language model called “Ferret-UI” that understands icons, widgets, and text on iOS mobile screen, and reasons about their spatial relationships and functional meanings. Example questions you can ask Ferret-UI: - Provide a summary of this screenshot; - For the interactive element [bbox], provide a phrase that best describes its functionality; - Predict whether the UI element [bbox] is tappable. With strong screen understanding, it's not hard to add action output to the model and make it a full-fledged on-device assistant. ———————————————————- Key quote from #WWDC 2024 presentation about Apple AI announcement: Apple is creating a personalized AI experience in a number of ways, including a new and improved version of Siri that is contextually aware of your data. “When we think about what it means for intelligence to be really useful, it has to be centered on you,” said Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi. “We think AI's role is not to replace our users but to empower them. It needs to be integrated into the experience you're using all the time. It needs to be intuitive, but it also needs to be informed by your personal context, real knowledge of you.” ———————————————————————— My take: #Apple perfected the touchscreen interface and now with ‘Apple Intelligence’ they have introduced NEW interface based on NLU, Multimodal LLM and #GenAI. This is a game changer!! On-device implementation of AI features on iPhone 15 pro and beyond, combined with strong privacy controls will entice its large install base to upgrade their iPhones to higher end models. This should translate into higher stock price. "We do not build Rabbit R1 to replace your phone." Rabbit debuted their flagship product R1 last night, the latest AI-powered gadget following the steps of Humane Pin and others. What is it? A small touch pad with a Siri like voice assistant that executes commands based on your voice. Couple takeaways from their keynote: - Hardware first: the team built a new hardware to be freed of the limitations of Apple & Google - It's fast: ~5ms response time for most actions, way faster than ChatGPT - Fair price: $199 with no subscriptions (crazy in today's world) Potential challenges: - Adoption: do people want to carry a separate "phone" that has a better "Siri" - Finding the niche: the gadget is for general purpose, what will be it's biggest use case? Is it to book an uber ride, or to reply to emails? - Competition: what if Apple and Google just integrated their assistant BETTER with apps? The Rabbit R1 will be the first of many to improve on the voice to action interface that current phones lack.
