Positive steps forward in tackling the climate emergency at local scale.
Interesting development in Dundee... As the first steps to transform Dundee's Bell Street multi-storey car park into a green transport hub could be taken in March if a report if approved by councillors, a tender for just over £4.5 million will be considered by the Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee for enabling works to prepare for the major construction project. The Green Transport Hub & Spokes initiative has been allocated £14.4 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Committee convener Steven Rome said: “Approval of this tender will start the ambitious redevelopment of the current car park into a pioneering green hub which is designed to help change people’s travel habits for the future. “This project will make a significant contribution towards our goal of creating a greener city made up of strong communities where people feel empowered and safe, and where we are tackling climate change to reach our target of net zero emissions by 2045." https://lnkd.in/en9Q-4Hp #NetZero #GreenInvestment #SustainableFuture #ScottishCities

Report from public consultation into the St Ives Low Carbon Transport Strategy now available to view The report outlining the findings of the public engagement carried out into the St Ives Low Carbon Transport Strategy is now available to view on the Let’s Talk Cornwall digital platform : https://lnkd.in/eumYYBc9 The Strategy is being funded and delivered as part of the St Ives Town Deal programme to help reduce the impact of vehicles on St Ives and introduce measures that encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport. The project has been allocated £5.5 million of Town Deal funding to create a Low Transport Environment (LTE) within the town centre by reducing traffic, enhancing safety, increasing accessibility, improving environmental health and delivering community and economic benefits. This funding needs to be spent by March 2026. Longer term measures will need to be funded from other sources. Members of the public were asked for their views on the draft proposals via a comprehensive consultation programme, including an online survey and a public exhibition in the town’s library, held between 27 November 2023 and 20 January 2024. Over 450 people took part in consultation. The majority of those responding via the survey (69.9%) said that the environment in the town centre needed changing and improving, with most supporting the principles of improving walking and cycling facilities, reducing level of traffic and improving public transport. However, while there was overall support for the aims of the Strategy, there were different views on how this should be achieved You can also view a copy of the report and a press release about the findings on the St Ives Town Deal website : https://lnkd.in/eRkqrCYy A report outlining the amended plans for the Mid Town Centre and Low Traffic Environment and One way system is currently due to be considered by members of St Ives Town Board at its meeting in May.

New article! Momentum's Alan Bolger takes a look at active travel and public realm enhancements in Ireland following 'Town Centre First' - a new policy approach for Irish towns and villages. The long-term vision of the policy is to “create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreation hub for the local community.” Read more from Alan, on the policy and Momentum's work in Ireland, here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gSybW7GN #Ireland #TransportPlanning #TransportConsultancy #PublicRealm #TownCentres #SpacesForPeople #TransportInfrastructure #FutureProofing #TransportPolicy #Mobility #UrbanMobility

What do you do when a majority of businesses in most towns are critical of how parking impacts on their trade? At The People & Places Partnership Ltd. , we felt we had to investigate. To achieve this, we created the simple People, Places & Parking Process which takes a business and customer focused-look at how parking serves town and city centres. Like a city centre multi storey, we developed the process as three levels. The first level offers an accessible overview of town centre parking issues. It’s helpful to groups such as BIDs that want to address businesses’ concerns and engage with parking managers in a meaningful way. The third level creates bespoke solutions to identified town centre parking issues. That was 7 years ago and the process quickly became featured as a case study of good practice by the Local Government Association and the focus of a series of British Parking Association seminars across the U.K. Over this summer we have worked with our partner Richard Ofield of Park Consult to review and update the process, including adding a greater emphasis on wider sustainable travel. Take a look at the new overview brochure and follow the dedicated LinkedIn page for useful tips and updates. It turns out that there is a lot of mis-information and mis-understanding about the role of parking in town centres. The good news is that fixing it is not rocket science and there is always at least one quick win everywhere we look 🚀 ⛔️ 🅿️ 👀 #parking #towncentres #citycentres #parkingmanagement #sustainabletravel

The increasing popularity of walkable communities is at odds with our drive-thru culture, but coexistence is possible through strategic urban planning. In Montreal, where pedestrian-friendly streets are common, zoning policies can play a crucial role. By placing buildings closer to roads, enhancing landscaping, and creating safer pedestrian pathways, cities can balance the convenience of drive-thrus with the benefits of walkability. These changes can lead to reduced emissions, improved air quality, and safer environments for all residents. https://lnkd.in/erv-GMv5

Significant decision from Dublin City Council on their transport plan. These changes can benefit business, residential and social aspects of a city when integrated into the other ecosystems. Public Transport will be key. With more bus lanes, increased public transport road space and less congestion, public transport will be improved for the majority of people in the city. Making it simple to use, accessible to all and easy to understand will be a key enabler of sustainable change. #integratedtravel #priority #sustainablecities https://lnkd.in/gPMbMrPg
