A recent cohort study published in Annals of Surgery delves into the career trajectories of general surgery residency graduates in the US. Analyzing data from 992 graduates, it finds that a mere 17% engage in academic careers. The study highlights significant associations between graduates from top-ranked programs and those with extensive publication records during residency, indicating these factors considerably boost academic career pursuit. This suggests that residency programs that aim to foster academic surgeons should intensify their support systems, particularly in providing mentorship and research opportunities. Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon sub-specializing in Athletic Injuries | Investor | Teacher | (aspiring)Surgical Artist | Researcher | Podcaster | Co-founder of "Indications" | "The sole of orthopedics👟"
How do you approach teaching X-rays? Great post from Jan S. My approach?? Start with the basics such as what the views are, right/left, etc. then I think describing fracture characteristics (transverse, diaphsyeal, displacement), then I think you can venture down the Weber/Lauge Hansen classification discussion. I know classifications aren’t perfect but it is amazing that we haven’t had another one proposed (outside AO classification)

In my previous post (https://lnkd.in/gFp4mzbs), we discussed the importance of anatomy for medical students. Physicians, surgeons, and healthcare professionals from around the world provided many great insights. Another important aspect of orthopaedic education is evaluating X-rays. What is your method for teaching X-ray evaluation/presentation? Should we be stressing classification systems, ie, Lauge Hansen? The x-rays below are from an early 30's male. How would you describe them? Nicholas Strasser MD 👟 William Crawford, MD FAAOS Renee Genova, MD, FAAOS PD Dr. med. Michael C. Tanner

Defender of Childhood | Specialist in Young Human Restoration, Renovation and Repairs || Pediatric Surgeon
Resource-poor facilities, low-volume institutions, unwritten protocols and undocumented evaluation procedures are just some of the factors to be considered when WE redesign training programs for surgeons. What weight should simulation and apprenticeship carry? What defines a critical procedure for specialty trainees? How do we train the Trainers in adult learning tools? Can we convince them to allow junior colleagues to learn ‘in the field’, how do we make supervised experiences Safe experiences? #TrainingSurgeons #HealthcareTechnology #AdultLearning #BasicPrinciples Surgery training has to step ‘out of the box’ and find new opportunities through innovative thinking and action.

Owner of Mobile Therapy Group, LLC: Outpatient therapy delivered in your home or our Hand Center. Certified Hand Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy services.
Great radial nerve pathway review Mirella Deisher. We have a patient currently at Mobile Therapy Group, LLC with radial nerve palsy, and I find it very helpful to educate the patient on the order of nerve innervation so they know what to expect and what to strengthen, with our guidance. Radial nerve palsy, also known as Saturday night palsy. It is a condition that occurs when the radial nerve in the upper arm is compressed for a prolonged period of time. It got its nickname of “Saturday Night Palsy” because it can happen when someone falls asleeps on their arm while intoxicated with the arm draped over furniture or even against the wall. Radial nerve palsy is also often associated with humeral fractures and or subluxations. Symptoms include: weakness or partial paralysis of muscles in the radial nerve distribution. Wrist drop, and inability to extend the fingers and thumb often occur. Treatment includes specialized, splinting, and exercises to target the muscles as re-innervation begins. #mobiletherapygroup #cht #certifiedhandtherapy #saturdaynightpalsy #radialnerve
In the March Journal of Hand Surgery a study found that the Brachialis muscle is innervated by the radial nerve in a potentially large percentage of people. In this study by Bertelli, Rojas-Niera, Garzon, and Levaro on fresh cadavers, they identified this pattern 41% of the time. So grateful to those that commit themselves to research. Virtual Hand to Shoulder Fellowship, LLC is committed to education within the specialty of upper limb and hand therapy which necessitates staying current and being able to appraise and appropriately integrate evidence to practice. VHSF offers curriculums for different learning goals, each scaffolding content to support effective critical thinking adjusted for the level of the learner, from introductory to advanced. We recently launched our May CHT Exam Prep cohort. We’ll be launching our next Virtual Hand Therapy Fellowship in September and we’re just getting started with our Intro to Hand Therapy cohort. All VHSF curriculums are AOTA approved.
