Why we shouldn’t compare our food choices with our grandparents. It’s a common refrain from our grandparents and parents : “We had everything in our time, why do you kids need to ‘diet’?” But what they might not realise is that their time was very different from ours. Their lifestyle, activity levels, food habits and even the air they breathed were all very different from today. For instance, just the other day l, I saw 2 kids taking the elevator to come down 2 floors. It’s not uncommon to see people, both kids and adults, take the elevator to climb just 1 floor up. Moreover, the concept of ‘diet’ has evolved. Back then, it simply meant the foods that people in a particular region ate, not something you do for a limited period of time to lose weight. Additionally, the kind of food available now(like junk and fast food) was not available in their times. Let’s remember, our food choices should be based on our current lifestyle and needs, not a comparison with the past. Let’s focus on making healthy choices that work for us today.
