🗞️ In 1916 a reporter in New York quoted an employer: “𝘕𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰” 1916 was just after the Technological Revolution, where rapid scientific discovery, standardisation, mass production and industrialisation changed the way that people work Henry Ford reduced hours and increased pay, and people's working lives improved dramatically Not unlike how the pandemic made flexible working mainstream As humans, we often perceive change as a threat and we criticise those who are early adopters of trends because they're different Technological advancements that cut out manual or non-impactful tasks and make things more efficient are the future, yet uptake is often looked down upon initially: 📺 Watching TV rather than reading a book? Lazy 🛍️ Ordering things online rather than going to the shops? Lazy 🏡 Working flexibly rather than sticking to rigid rules? Lazy 🐎 Driving rather than riding your horse? I suspect that burnout wasn't recognised then, as it often isn't now. Working people more isn't the answer to increasing productivity. 🙄 In fact, depending on which study, as there's variations...most people are only truly productive for about 3-4 hours in a day. This concept challenges traditional 8-hour workday norms and should encourage businesses to rethink how they structure the workdays for maximum efficiency. Great post Molly Johnson-Jones Side note, before the pandemic, as a disabled person, I often asked if I could work from home (at the time was working in social care sector) and my requests were refused repeatedly! Suddenly during the pandemic, it was the norm.

Well, I wouldn't say that all of those above are true.. Going to the shops or reading a book is more friction full, and might be more beneficial for society.. I think it's about what you do with your saved time and or energy. When viewing TV, are you binge-watching or intentionally watching one and then spend time with a loved one. If you order online, do you order an entire wardrobe or order exactly what you need? Similar to working remotely, which can be friction full, requires you to find a good location to work from, keep your work rhythm disciplined and don't hop around all the time. But the moment you found your groove, flow will set in, Molly Johnson-Jones Currently, working remotely from Northern Portugal in the mountains and loving it ✌️

If a company adopts an AI tool that provides 50% efficiencies in output, does the CEO fire half the workforce or reduce their hours by 50% on full pay ? The company is profitable.

Working less hours, more efficiently and in a better environment because, guess what? flexibility exists, will always be the stuff of nightmares for those who measure productivity by the amount of working hours/employee. Absolutely ridiculous. That's what tech is for, to provide a better quality of life and to help us achieve more in less time so we can dedicate our free time to whatever it is we want to do.

It's interesting how my conditioned brain agreed with the 'lazy' note for the first one, less for the second and third and by the time you got to 'horse' it sounded archaic to think that was lazy. One day, I hope it will be widely accepted that 5 days in the office is archaic!
