Are we inadvertently causing people to fail? I was recently reminded about a harrowing story from the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. With some of the world’s most accomplished gymnasts falling and hurting themselves during vaulting, a teenage champion from Australia, Allana Slater, was about to perform when she realized the bar was too low. Sure enough, when measured by officials, they found the bar was 5cm low and the cause of the earlier incidents, which could’ve proven fatal but thankfully weren’t. We often see similar situations play out inside workplaces. How many times have we put people into roles, not constructed the job well, had them not work out and replace them without addressing the underlying problem? Then we rinse and repeat without considering it’s the role, not the person. I have coached numerous executives over the years and seen this scenario play out time and again. No one feels comfortable speaking out about the situation because they don’t want to be the troublemaker. The problem persists, with the organization and those people who didn’t succeed often suffering the consequences. What should we do? First, as leaders, we ought to know better now to look for root cause when we see a negative pattern. Seek deeper understanding and do not accept superficial assessments. Second, there are tools today that help measure human capital – we have them at CEO.works -- to help clients forecast role success based on a variety of criteria. With this knowledge, leaders improve that role success by reshaping it or considering different talent requirements. Third, let’s please treat our best people better than that. If someone doesn’t succeed in a role but has previously performed strong, let’s figure out why. Maybe it’s a new assignment that plays to their strengths? Or maybe it’s increased support in the existing role. Let’s show them and others that we’re listening to their expert insights and correctly setting the bar to win. #humancapital #talenttovalue #talent #winning

The power of powerful questions! What makes a question powerful? For me, it's when I'm in deep conversation with someone and they're having a realization that something is not quite right. And then having the courage to explore what to do about that discomfort or pull, and then work towards making that change a reality...and the "rest is history" as we often say afterward. This is just one reason why I love what I do. Having such a profound and positive impact on someone's life is truly inspiring and rewarding...starting from sparks off a powerful question. Here is an example of how a powerful question from a team-building event has literally changed the course of Deanna's life. After almost 16 years retired from competitive skating, she returned and has her sights set on the Olympics. So what was that powerful question for Deanna? If you knew you couldn't fail, what would you do with your life? So I ask you: What powerful questions have made an impact on you, or ones that you've asked to the people you lead? https://lnkd.in/gPDVWhYD More information on Deanna's journey at her Instagram @deannamsd622 #PowerfulQuestions #Leadership #TeamLeadership #LeadershipCoaching #EmployeeExperience #GrowthMindset

Founder of NewtonsMind LLC Mental Performance Emotional Control Empowerment Breathe Self talk Mindset Author of book “How To Go Through Less Shit As An Athlete”
How to eliminate negative self talk! Out of mind, into paper which will allow you to create some space between you(the witness) and the thoughts(the problem). Once written down, I want you to question, analyze and examine the thought to see if it’s based in truth. Once you recognize there’s no truth to it, replace it with a positive thought. Then you cross out the original negative thought, crumble up the paper and throw it away. Some of these thoughts will be heavier and therefore, come with stronger energy. When this is the case, you may simply need to repeat this process until that same thought, stops coming to mind. You possess the ability and power to do this. You have everything you need and it’s time you start taking control of your thinking, so you can better control your performance. #life #hockey #athlete #pro #hockeypro #prohockey #mindset #thoughts #thinking #negative #positive
