With grocery costs having risen by 24.7% since March 2020 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), and less overstock available for donation, food banks are finding it increasingly difficult to support those in need. Food insecurity is a worldwide problem that manifests itself locally in all our communities. Over the past few years, Curcio Webb, LLC’s holiday donation has been made to Chef José Andrés World Central Kitchen program. The World Central Kitchen teams are first on the spot wherever hot meals and human kindness are needed. Karen McKeon volunteered for a ½ day volunteer shift Thursday, June 27th at Mercer Street Friends Food Bank. In 2021, Karen directed her Curcio Webb charitable donation to Mercer Street Friends. At the time she shared that “the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank channels 5.5 million pounds of food and groceries annually to a network of over 100 local food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, meal sites, schools, senior and disabled programs, and low-income housing sites. Our food distribution and hunger prevention programs reach over 60,000 people who face the pain and indignity of hunger.” Five point five MILLION pounds annually—how impressive is that? The day Karen volunteered at the Food Bank they needed help labeling bags for “SHUP” (their Send HUnger Packing program). SHUP is a "meal bag program that helps feed food insecure students over the weekend when they lack access to school meals." It distributes 10,000 bags a month to students in need throughout Mercer County, New Jersey. Karen, your in-the-trenches work at the Food Bank is so important. Thank you! It’s not just students in Mercer County, New Jersey who run the risk of going hungry on the weekends. Curcio Webb is going to address local food insecurity for children at our upcoming annual company meeting. Brian Pieper and his wife Katie are spearheading an opportunity for us to pack bags of food for children to eat during the weekend. They’re tapping into a local program that helps kids get meals on weekends i.e., where they are already participating in a meals-at-school program. “My name is Denys. I'm food services manager at Main Street Project. I'm on the 4th year working here now. We are working on the partnerships with different donors and getting food to people who need it the most. It’s challenging to find right the fit for people who are unable to cook on their own. We do have some access to raw foods, but many of our participants don't have ability to cook that food. Another challenge is we have a very tiny kitchen that supports the operation of feeding on average 500 plus people a day. The biggest challenge, I would say, is to get folks the right nutrients of food. Food insecurity is huge and has become even more of a problem here in Winnipeg. There is an uptick in using the food banks. This tells me that food insecurity has grown a lot. We see much younger people coming over to the food bank. We see families with little kids that are coming to food bank as well. Right now, we are facing a higher inflation, food cost is way, way higher than what we experienced before and our food donations is way lower than we have ever seen it. I've done calculations for our shelter. When we feed people three times a day, came down to $0.71 per person per day for three times. Quite often, people will think oh, I have to give at least $10 or $20 to make a difference. No, it's not the case. Typically, I contribute through donations, but this year, I'm pushing past my comfort zone... 👉 What’s the challenge? Each day in September, we're walking 3,000 steps in memory of the 3,000 lives lost to foodborne illness in the U.S. each year. This also aligns with National Food Safety Education Month—a cause that means so much to many of us in the profession. 👟 Why? Because food safety matters. Small actions today can lead to big changes tomorrow. So, any contribution is appreciated and will make a difference. 🎯 Our goal? We aim to raise $1,000 for STOP Foodborne Illness. This past Tuesday was Hunger Action Day! CEO Scott Rumpsa joined The Morning Mix on Fox 17 to share how neighbors like you can help nourish our neighbors and build a stronger, healthier communtiy. Hunger doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Families who struggle to access the food they need often face other challenges, and a setback in one area creates a ripple effect across systems: education, childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, food, finances, and transportation. Complex problems require holistic solutions - that’s why we combine healthy food access, resource navigation, financial empowerment, and street outreach to build a community where all of our neighbors have what they need to thrive, and no one faces challenges alone. My heart has been heavy this weekend watching a place I called home for five years be washed away. It's been heartening to see the community and people from neighboring towns come together to offer support but I can't imagine what it's going to take to rebuild. So many friends have lost homes, businesses, and studios. So many people are without safe drinking water, electricity, and more, and many will be without income sources for quite some time. Like with most disasters, lots of "aid" organizations will show up out of nowhere asking for money to help the community but many of these funnel the majority of donations into operating and advertising while reserving very little for the actual communities and people affected.
