Celebrating May Day: A Tribute to Labour Movements Worldwide May 1st marks the commemoration of International Labour's Day, also known as May Day, a day deeply rooted in the history of labour movements globally. A Global Movement: Since the late 19th century, workers and labour unions across the world have come together on this day to honour the contributions of workers, advocate for labour rights, and champion social and economic justice. Historical Significance: May Day originated from the struggle for an eight-hour workday, particularly symbolized by the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers protested for better working conditions. This pivotal event sparked a wave of international solidarity and inspired subsequent labour movements worldwide. Continued Relevance: Today, May Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignified livelihoods for all workers. It stands as a testament to the power of collective action in advancing the rights and well-being of workers everywhere. Let's honour the spirit of solidarity and resilience embodied by May Day, and continue to strive for a world where every worker is valued, respected, and empowered. Why the First Monday in September Matters: The Story of Labour Day in Canada Every year, the first Monday in September is marked as Labour Day in Canada—a day with deep historical roots and profound significance. This date isn’t just a chance for a long weekend; it represents the culmination of a long struggle for workers' rights and fair labor practices. Labour Day traces back to the late 19th century, a period of intense industrial growth and labor activism. Workers, driven by the need for safer conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours, organized strikes and rallies to demand better treatment. Their efforts led to significant reforms and laid the foundation for the modern labor rights we benefit from today. The choice of the first Monday in September for Labour Day serves as a symbolic end to summer and a celebration of the hard work and dedication of Canadian workers. It’s a reminder of the progress we’ve made and the ongoing commitment to ensuring fair labor practices for all. As we enjoy the day off, let's reflect on the legacy of those who fought for our rights and honor their contributions by continuing to support and uplift our workforce. Happy Labour Day!

https://lnkd.in/g2AbUXFs So despite their inability to even provide us with basic services, protect our rights etc everyone in government wants a financial reward. Yet when the general public complains about cost of living etc we get ignored. MPs should be forced to live on the average wage rate if employees in Fiji same for their equally corrupt minions. Then we'll see how quickly attitudes and policies will change. Fiji deserves an actual democracy. Hint: democracy isn't just about voting.
