Very exciting to have Clint as one of my new grantees, and for him to be a new National Geographic Explorer! As written in our new National Geographic article, "Indigenous peoples everywhere in the world are guardians of deep knowledge systems that are often woven into customs and traditions handed down through generations and that reflect a holistic worldview quite different to the predominantly quantitative and reductionist approaches of modern science." (link here: https://lnkd.in/eV9njjE9) Indigenous voices and knowledge are central to effective and just marine stewardship, and supporting Indigenous peoples and their rights will be imperative to undo the legacy of unjust and ineffective marine conservation stemming from parachute science, 'fortress' conservation approaches, and 'blue colonialism', etc.

You won't believe what you sea this #ScienceWeek! 🌊🐬🦈 In a world first, scientists from the South Australia Research and Development Institute (SARDI) have used cameras deployed on Australian sea lions to map the critical habitats used by the endangered species, collecting 90 hours of footage across more than 500km of seabed!! The footage has captured global attention, providing exquisite imagery of sea lions swimming through underwater chasms, kelp forests and sponge gardens as they search for prey, interacting with other marine life such as dolphins and sharks along the way! It's enabled scientists to better understand the habitats important to the species' survival and map over 5,000sq km of previously unmapped seabed! The research was undertaken in partnership with the University of Adelaide and funded through the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program ( NESP Marine and Coastal Hub ) who continue to support and extend this important work. Together with a large team of international experts I reviewed the use of herbivores, for example fishes, urchins or crabs, in reef restoration. We believe reef restoration could be more successful if, besides outplanting coral, grazing pressure is restored as well! New research led by Monterey Bay Aquarium and the University of California, Santa Cruz, reveals that denser, and more sheltered, kelp forests can withstand serious stressors amid warming ocean temperatures. Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the study also offers the first comprehensive assessment of how declines in kelp abundance affected marine algae, invertebrates, and fishes living in Monterey Bay. The study comes after a multi-year marine heat wave—the product of a 2014 'blob' of warm water prolonged by a 2015–2016 El Niño event—bathed the North American west coast with sweltering sea temperatures." I have zero regrets about my academic and professional path (thanks, Brandeis University and Stony Brook University!), but there's always been something about the OSU Marine Resource Management Program - Oregon State University ... I always kinda thought I should have done this program. Well, at least I got to write about it for Strata magazine. The MRM program has been going strong for 50 years, producing an interdisciplinary workforce that provides educators, managers, consultants, and advocates for the nation's coasts, ocean and coastal communities.
