"Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies vessel speed reduction (VSR) program announced results from 2023, including a reduction in coastal California air pollution, lowered risk to whales, and reduced ocean noise. The voluntary program ran May 1 through December 15, 2023. Thirty-three global shipping companies participated in the voluntary incentive-based VSR program in 2023. Companies reduced ship speeds off California, transiting at 10 knots or less in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay region and the Southern California region. Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies achieved the highest participation and cooperation levels since its inception in 2014, even after phasing out financial incentives. Shipping companies are recognized with awards for their level of performance." Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program https://lnkd.in/gdfvBGvc

The 2023 Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program has again demonstrated the powerful impact of the shipping industry's commitment to environmental stewardship. This year, participating companies achieved a 27% reduction in NOx and GHG emissions from their fleets compared to 2016 baseline conditions, equivalent to turning 800,000 passenger vehicles to zero emissions for a year. Furthermore, adherence to reduced speeds resulted in a significant decrease in the risk of ship strikes on whales and lowered ocean noise pollution, making the oceans a safer place for these creatures. #AirPollution #ShipSpeedReduction #OceanConservation

The winter dilemma often circles around the topic of salt on roads. It's like a classic winter tale – snow falls, roads freeze, and out come the salt trucks, turning icy danger into slushy safety. But as we've grown more environmentally conscious, the tale has taken a twist. Let's dive into this frosty narrative and explore whether the salting of roads is a necessity or an environmental challenge. #BenefitsofTractionMagic #GaiaEnterprises #GaiaEnterprisesInc #SaltOnRoads

"Last week, representatives Salud Carbajal and Jared Huffman introduced a bill for a new federal program to encourage shipping companies to voluntarily reduce their speeds to protect marine life and cut air pollution. It builds off the regional Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program, which started in the Santa Barbara Channel 10 years ago by establishing speed reduction zones and giving recognition to participating shipping companies. The large volume of ships that pass through the channel increase noise pollution — making the channel about 30 times louder than it was pre–industrial revolution, according to a recent study in the Marine Pollution Bulletin — which makes it harder for marine life, especially whales, to navigate their environment." https://lnkd.in/gvW-wUbK

"A record number of cargo companies voluntarily reduced ship speeds off California to ease coastal air pollution and lower risks to whales, according to a marine conservation program called Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies. Thirty-three global shipping companies slowed their vessels to 10 knots or less in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay region and the Southern California region from May 1 through Dec. 15, the months of peak air pollution and greatest abundance of endangered blue, humpback and fin whales." Some things should be a matter of course. Protecting the environment is one. The only problem is that it is not. Or rather: To too many it is not. This year’s #WorldEnvironmentDay focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. And even though we operate at sea, this is also important to us. The UN points to seven ways to restore land, halt desertification, and combat drought. In one of them, renewing coastal and marine areas, countries are encouraged to enforce strict regulations on pollution. At Höegh Autoliners, preventing pollution - protecting the environment - is a focal point. Both pollution-to-air and pollution-to-water. And thereby land. As a global shipping company, we have a responsibility to the environment in which we operate. And we systematically work to reduce our environmental footprint. We operate a strict zero garbage overboard principle. All garbage produced on board is segregated in separate containers and only disposed of at approved shore facilities. We minimize the spread of invasive species through Ballast Water Treatment Systems. Two important pollution-to-water initiatives. Two pollution-to-air goals: Our zero by 40: Our aim to reach net zero operations in 2040. And our 30 by 30 goal: Our target of reducing our annual efficiency ratio of more than 30% by 2030. We are well underway. And we are working every day to get there! #Shipping #Maritime #Sailingforsustainability #HöeghAutoliners

♦ IMO Agrees to Reduce Underwater Noise Pollution from Shipping The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved an action plan to reduce the impact of underwater noise pollution from shipping on marine wildlife and Indigenous communities. The action plan, which was welcomed by the Clean Arctic Alliance, includes developing best practices, experience-building, and laying the groundwork for new policy. However, the Clean Arctic Alliance also criticized the IMO for failing to make progress toward mandatory rules that would ensure noise reduction throughout the oceans. The report on the IMO meeting was published by American Journal of Transportation, a leading source of news and information for the global transportation industry. AJOT covers topics such as maritime, liner shipping, shipping technology, and alternative energy. Noise pollution can disrupt the communication, navigation, and feeding of marine animals, such as whales, dolphins, and fish. It can also affect the health and well-being of the people who live near the coast or depend on marine resources for food and culture. ☼ John S.
