The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation PennDOT announced today that a truck detour will begin on Monday for westbound Route 463 Horsham Road truck traffic under a $14.2 million project to improve travel and safety at the Route 309 Bethlehem Pike, Route 463 Horsham Road/Cowpath Road, and Business U.S. 202 Doylestown Road Intersection, commonly referred to as the Five-Points Intersection, in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County. Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction: • Monday, August 19, through spring 2025, trucks traveling westbound on Route 463 Horsham Road will not have right hand turn access to Business U.S. 202 Doylestown Road for intersection reconstruction and widening. During the detour, westbound Route 463 Horsham Road trucks will be directed to use the U.S. 202 Parkway and County Line Road. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near and through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent. The Five Points Intersection is tentatively scheduled to be closed on Sunday, August 25, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for large overhead sign removal. As elected officials across the country recognize #InfrastructureWeek, we continue our call for increased federal investment to expand #truckparking capacity nationwide. The severe lack of commercial truck parking isn't just an inconvenience for truck drivers—it jeopardizes highway safety for the entire motoring public and puts enormous strain on the supply chain. Fortunately, there are solutions within reach: ➡️ State departments of transportation can apply to USDOT for discretionary grant funding to expand parking capacity. ➡️ Congress can pass the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, which authorizes $755 million in competitive grant funding specifically for truck parking projects nationwide.

I've always wondered why I-10 has 3 lanes both ways, in & out of Tucson as far as Picacho, but Phoenix, THE STATE CAPITAL, has 2 measly lanes to go to Tucson. On any given day, the traffic alone bottlenecks and results in a 3 hours trip going to our from Tucson. If there's any type of accident, forget about it! You're stuck for an eternity. Can anyone provide information as to WHY it has taken this long to expand 1-10 going to Tucson? #ADOT #i10totucson #trafficmanagement #trafficnightmaresgoingtotucson #expandingi10 #unacceptabledrivingconditionforastatecapital #phoenixhasterribleroads #drivingtotucsonisanightmare #arizonahighways

Here's a positive trucking news story to start the day: more truck parking in BC's Vancouver area, right close to the Port Mann bridge. --- As someone who has done a lot of trucking in the BC Lower Mainland and often struggled to find overnight parking, this is welcome news! Similar to Alberta's growing collection of new truck stops, these projects create immediate, tangible benefits to carriers and, most importantly, truckers looking for rest. This article, by Phil Melnychuk, has the details on this provincial-federal initiative. And, great news: it has washrooms and security provisions! That might seem like an obvious addition to a rest stop, but many places truckers park for the night lack these sorts of amenities. Great work, Government of British Columbia, Government of Canada, and all others involved! This is a big improvement for safety and comfort in the industry. --- Michelle Spacil Cliff Litke Josh Hannaberry Rob D. With major changes along Loop 1604 in recent months, San Antonio is working to meet the traffic demands now and in the future as the population is growing. "If traffic projections for 2040 are correct, officials say what is now a roughly 30-minute drive on Loop 1604 could become upwards of 113 minutes – or nearly two hours – if the expansion project were not underway." At the end of this project that is predicted to end in 2028, the stretch of Loop 1604 from Bandera Road to I-35 is going to shift from a four-lane highway to 10 lanes with a high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction. Transportation Planner at Michael Baker International | Dedicated to Sustainable Transportation and Land Use Planning
The Pennsylvania State Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) and State Transportation Commission (STC) recently approved an exciting new study focused on truck parking. The availability/quality of truck parking is a national safety concern and the trucking industry plays a vital role in our economy. Especially with today's desire for speedy delivery, it is critical that drivers have easy access to a safe place to park and rest. The TAC's "Expanding Truck Parking in Pennsylvania" looks at these concerns from a statewide perspective and identifies corridors in need of truck parking capacity. It also establishes an implementation framework to help Pennsylvania and its partners address these needs. Once again, a notorious junction where Interstate 95 and New Jersey State Route 4 intersect in Fort Lee, N.J., just outside of New York City, claims the dubious honor of topping the list of the nation’s worst trucking chokepoints on the American Transportation Research Institute's Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks list. ATRI's examination, drawing upon data from 2023, revealed that traffic conditions are persistently worsening compared to preceding years, partly attributed to construction zones arising from heightened infrastructure investments. During rush hour, the average speed for trucks was 34.4 MPH, marking a decline of nearly four percent from the prior year. Within the top-10 areas, the average rush hour truck speed dropped to 28.5 MPH. Queens, NY: I-495 recorded the lowest Rush Hour Average Speed, averaging just 15.6 MPH. Close behind was Chicago, IL: I-90 at I-94 (north) with 18.6 MPH, followed by Fort Lee, NJ: I-95 at SR 4 with an average speed of 19.9 MPH. If you've ever been caught in that traffic, you know firsthand the amount of time wasted. Curious to know more? In a recent development that concerns drivers nationwide, California's iconic Highway 1 experienced partial collapse, modifying the course for motorists navigating the iconic route. Without predilection, the reality of breaking news in our industry invariably serves to remind us of the untameable force of nature and the consequential effects on infrastructure, notably our precious freeways. In this instance, the ordinarily bustling twofold lanes on CA's Highway 1 have reduced to a creeping pace on a single open thoroughfare since the incident occurred. Looking at the broader narrative: - Road disruptions, such as this, have far-reaching implications from frustrating delays and missed opportunities to the more serious potential for accidents due to unfamiliar detours. - However, there could be a silver lining here, a chance to implement enhanced driving safety measures during the process of necessary infrastructure redevelopment following a collapse. - Moreover, this event serves as another stark reminder of the importance of regular infrastructure maintenance and updates to ensure road safety and consistent traffic flow. While our hearts go out for those impacted by this occurrence, especially commuters who are having to navigate this difficulty daily, we champion the safe driving practices amounting from these genuine predicaments.
