How this revolutionary farmer transformed failure into a global mission. (Yes, he lost his first business) Back in 1998, Ruud Sanders took over his family's poultry farm with traditional goals: Produce as many eggs as possible, at the lowest cost. Like every farmer at that time. But in 2007, bankruptcy hit him hard. Due to rampant growth and bird flu outbreaks. That his wake-up call. He began to question everything. Why do we strive to cut costs relentlessly? Who really pays the price for our cheap production? Through deep reflection and crucial encounters with African colleagues, he realised the harsh impact of their practices. They were not as efficient as we believed. Feeding animals with grains that could nourish people directly was fundamentally flawed. So, he decided to change the narrative with Kipster. A true turnaround. They advocate for consuming fewer animal-based products. And innovate farming methods that respect biodiversity, climate, and animal welfare. Their goal isn't to maximise profit. It's to feed the world fairly and sustainably. As an idealistic entrepreneur, he believes in making money to sustain the business, but that’s not their primary focus. Ruud’s mission is clear: demonstrate that ethical farming is not only possible but necessary. Food is not a problem but a solution. 🧡 ___ PS: Tomorrow, we will share the episode featuring Ruud, in which we delve into how to utilise waste streams as feed for animals to lower carbon footprint, the future of this new economy, and the challenges of sustainable poultry farming. If you care about a sustainable future where animals play a role, this episode is for you. 🫶 Share and like if you support his work in changing farming practices to a more sustainable one. #agriculture #food #poultry #farmers #futureoffarming

Farming for the Future: Why Soil is the Secret to Success 🌱🐖 At Porcus Natura, Francisco Alves is showing us a revolutionary way forward for agriculture. By working with four animal species, Francisco isn’t just raising livestock—he’s regenerating the land. 🐑🐖 🐐 🐂 What sets Francisco apart is his focus on soil health: "When we focus on livestock, we forget the soil. But when we focus on soil, we never forget the livestock." This shift in mindset has transformed his farm into a resilient, biodiverse ecosystem. By prioritizing soil health, Francisco has: Reduced input costs Enhanced biodiversity Built climate resilience 📽️ Watch the video to learn how Porcus Natura is using regenerative practices to create a profitable and sustainable farming model for the future. 🌍✨ Francisco Alves (Herdade de S. We are excited to announce the release of our new policy brief, Future Fit Farming, now live on our website! While our 2022 Farmers’ Voices report explored visionary possibilities for a food system less reliant on industrial animal agriculture, this new brief focuses on practical, on-farm solutions and the policy recommendations needed to create a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agricultural future across Europe. Highlights include: - Feasible steps toward more sustainable farming practices - Policy recommendations informed by diverse farming organisations - Case studies showcasing successful policy shifts A key part of this brief is fostering alignment with groups that may not fully share our perspective but agree on one crucial point: industrial animal agriculture is detrimental to planetary health, public health, and social justice. This reflects ProVeg’s strategic approach of prioritising pragmatism over idealism while working toward our mission of 50% reduction in global animal products by the year 2040. Read the full policy brief and join us in driving meaningful, systemic change. Together, we can transform the future of farming! 🌍 📖 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dR92tTus #FutureFitFarming #FoodSystems #ProVeg

#Insectfarming: solution or just another problem in a suit? Our Insects Political Adviser, Francis Maugère responds to Christophe Derrien, IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed)’s secretary general who criticised our recent interview in which we discussed the sustainability and welfare issues related to insect farming. ''I take note that Mr. Derrien actually agrees with our main point that insect products for human consumption are modest and focus on niche markets that do not directly replace unsustainable animal products. The biggest market is indeed animal feed — thus, insects are not the revolutionary food solution they are often promoted to be. Further, by supporting conventional animal farming, this emerging sector does not deliver on the wide-scale food system transformation the EU desperately needs'' says Francis. Although our and IPIFF's opinions may differ on several points, we both agree on one: more research on insect sentience is needed. Read the full exchange on Food Ingredients First: https://lnkd.in/dsD_Jz84 We always welcome constructive exchanges. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Heard of Kipster? They’re the #poultry farmers on a mission to revolutionize food production by prioritizing ethics and #sustainability, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations. Kipster’s aim to create a more resilient agricultural model is based on: – Animal-centered design whose systems prioritize animal welfare, enabling chickens to express natural behaviors while maintaining productivity. – Resource efficiency: feeding chickens only by-products to avoid feed-food competition, optimizing resource use and minimizing environmental impact. – Economic viability: demonstrating that sustainability can coexist with profitability, and that innovative systems can benefit farmers, animals, and consumers alike. Such creative thinking and systems-level innovation can address the complex challenges facing agriculture today. What other examples of innovative farming systems have you come across? Tell us in the comments. Learn more: https://kipster.farm/ #sustainableagriculture #cdnag

I am conducting research for my bachelor's thesis on "Willingness to Pay as an Economic Measure of Consumer Acceptance of Land-Based Salmon Farming" focusing on the DACH Region (🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭) under the supervision of Dr. Peter Schwazer. Traditional salmon farming in open-net pens, has been linked to significant environmental concerns, animal welfare issues and health risks for the end consumer. The potentially devastating effects of this farming method on the salmon can be seen in the video below. Attribution: Ed Shephard / We Animals In contrast, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), used in land-based salmon farming offer a sustainable alternative that mitigates these risks, but come at a higher financial cost. My aim is therefore to determine whether consumers are willing to pay a higher price for sustainably farmed salmon, helping to cover the higher startup, R&D and operating costs of the industry to ultimately protect our environment and threatened wild salmon populations. I would greatly appreciate if you could take 3 minutes of your valuable time to complete my survey and possibly share it with your friends, family and colleagues! Thad Rose is a Native rancher implementing sustainable grazing practices on his 3,000-acre grass pasture ranch. He's part of a collaborative study by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) to understand the financial, soil, and animal health impacts of regenerative agriculture on Native farming and ranching operations. This three-year project (2022-2024) aims to provide data-driven insights that help Native producers like Thad adopt regenerative practices, improving soil health, livestock well-being, and financial resilience. 🌱 Check out the Rose Ranch Case Study and EDF's “Regenerative Agriculture in Action” videos to see how Thad and other Native producers are leading the way in sustainable farming.
