Join Us at UPMADE IN EE NYCxDESIGN - our exploration of Estonia’s design contributions to sustainability unfolds in 4 engaging sections: Tradition & Craftsmanship • Upcycling • Recycling • Biomaterials. RECYCLING Delve into the groundbreaking world of Estonian recycling, where waste is not an end, but a new beginning. This section delves into the innovative processes that transform waste into valuable materials, underpinning a design ecosystem focused on regeneration and sustainability. Estonian design advocates for the principle that a product’s end-of-life is as critical as its inception, with a growing emphasis on designing for disassembly. This ensures products can be effortlessly dismantled for recycling, reducing waste. At the forefront of sustainable material development, Estonian researchers and designers are pioneering smart packaging solutions and other materials that are easier to recycle, significantly lowering the environmental impact and leading the charge in ecological design solutions. MEET THE DESIGNER Anne-Liis Leht / HYTI Two qualities give the ZEN soap dish meaning – material and function. Crystal clear soda-lime glass, which until now has not been reprocessed or recycled in Estonia, can now be put back into circulation in the form of soap holders. There is a choice of colorless or colored soap holders – the former are made from onetime awards, souvenirs and gifts, while the latter are made from HYTI studio production leftovers. #upmadeinEE #NYCxDESIGN #estoniandesignhouse #upmadeinESTONIA #estoniancultureabroad #estoniandesign #recycling #hytidesign #anneliisleht

The Founding Story Of MM: How 2 Guys Found A Leather-Like Wonder Material Have you ever wondered how a small idea can transform an entire industry? What about this: why not make a material out of high-grade paper and cotton; leather-like in smell, feel, performance, and durability…Everything except in how leather is sourced, and be the go-to material for a new generation of green craftsmen and design. MM’s co-founders became obsessed with the possibility of this idea during their time within the traditional leather industry. Boasting extensive backgrounds working with leather materials, they understood the beauty but also the hidden costs of using leather materials in craft goods, particularly, the environmental impacts of producing leather. It all begins with raising livestock, which requires vast amounts of land, water, and feed that contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Further into the next stage, the tanning process involves the use of toxic chemicals, such as chromium, posing risks to both human health and the environment. The disposal of these chemicals further contributes to water pollution and the intensive energy consumption involved in leather processing contributes to carbon emissions that exacerbates climate change. It was clear that the questions for leather became increasingly pressing, but what was there to replace it? It was then they finally found a superior material to leather: The MM material. A product material that requires far less energy input compared to leather and removes the need for harsh chemicals for production. Consequently, because the composition of MM material is simple, it became the reason why MM material is able to be completely plastic free and biodegradable in landfill. Moreover, it encourages upcycling and could be easily tailored to the needs of any project. From then on, MM embarked on a mission to bring about a sustainable change with their new-found material across the leather crafts industry and, challenge the status quo, offering a bespoke, custom and tailored leather alternative. Join us on a captivating journey as we explore the possibilities of MM's bio-innovative solutions, a company that has set its sights for revolutionizing the materials and leather industry. >>GREENWASHING OR SUSTAINABLEWASHING? Greenwashing and sustainablewashing are terms that describe misleading marketing practices by companies or organizations, but they have different scopes. > GREENWASHING Greenwashing specifically involves exaggerating or falsifying environmental credentials to make a company appear more eco-friendly than it is. The term comes from combining "green" (related to ecology) and "whitewashing" (covering up). Common tactics of greenwashing include: -Making false or misleading claims about the environmental benefits of products. -Using eco-friendly imagery or terminology without substantial sustainable practices. -Highlighting minor environmental improvements to divert attention from overall harmful practices. > SUSTAINABLEWASHING Sustainablewashing is a broader term that encompasses not just environmental deception but also false claims about social and economic sustainability. Examples of sustainablewashing include: -Greenwashing (environmental aspects). -Misleading statements about socially responsible actions, such as fair labor practices or community support. -Overstating economic sustainability practices, like financial transparency or fair trade. IN SHORT: -Greenwashing focuses solely on environmental aspects. -Sustainablewashing encompasses a wider range of sustainability issues, including social and economic aspects. Greenwashing is a subset of sustainablewashing, with the former concentrating on environmental misrepresentation, while the latter covers a broader range of sustainability deceptions. Sustainability expert AdaRosaBalzan explained it wonderfully and with great expertise on the subject at the "GREENWASHING AND REPUTATIONAL RISK" conference organized by Assimpredil Ance in Milan. The world of construction and real estate still has a long way to go! #greenwashing #sustainablewashing #biophilia #biofilia #biophobia #biofobia #biophilic #biophilicdesign #progettazionebiofilica #progettazionebiofila #biophilicarchitecture #biophilicoffice #ufficiobiofilo #biophilicretail #retailbiofilico #architetturabiofilica #sustainability #sostenibilità #regenerative #regeneration #biocentric #biocentrico #nature #natura #naturebased #greenarchitecture #environment #ambiente #architecture #architettura #design #interiordesign #interiors #reconnectingwithnature #wearenature

🌳🛠️ In our quest to find inspiring projects for the #RedesignEverythingChallenge, we were pointed towards Lúdica Teia, a design initiative in São Paulo that's transforming fallen trees into stunning public furniture. Led by designer Hugo França, this project not only rescues urban wood waste but also fosters sustainable skills in the community through workshops and educational programming in tree-carving. But Lúdica Teia's impact goes beyond aesthetics. It addresses two pressing issues in Brazil: the increasing frequency of natural disasters and the lack of interactive spaces in inner cities. By repurposing fallen trees, this project serves as a powerful reminder to rethink how we see and utilise natural resources in urban areas, and how we tackle wood waste. Discover more inspiring case studies like Lúdica Teia and join the movement to #RedesignEverything for a better future.
