We are glad to see the work of Contest Every Race highlighted in Los Angeles Times thanks to the work of Mark Z. Barabak. It is important to center local elections in conversations about free and fair elections. Contest Every Race Executive Director Lauren Gepford and her team know that when voter's don't have choices at the ballot, they also don't have any protection from dangerous ideologues getting into office. "The philosophy here is that extremism thrives and builds and grows when we don't put up a fight and when we allow ourselves to have a really unrepresentative democracy." But Contest Every Race is working to fix that- with 7,000 recruited candidates and counting. Contest Every Race candidate, Lucas Reinke says it best. "I just want to make sure everyone in the county has the ability to vote for the candidate they think can do the best job and do so without fear of intimidation or retribution.." If Ms Harris wins, Mr Trump will not be so gracious. In that third scenario, the complexity of America’s voting system collides with the maga conspiracy machine. The Republican National Committee has pre-emptively filed more than 100 election lawsuits in the states to create a paper trail in preparation to fight the result... To be clear, America will still see a peaceful transfer of power in January 2025. Neither side will be able to install a president who lost by the rules. But that is a minimal definition of democratic success. In the broader sense, elections are meant to generate the consent of the people to be governed, even by a president for whom they did not vote. That requires voters to believe that the process is fair and can be trusted, so that their side has a decent shot in four years. Each time people feel that an election lacks legitimacy, the day draws closer when one side or the other breaks the system rather than accept the result. https://lnkd.in/giJznZNb

Ahead of another big election year in the US, it's time to discuss a major voting issue…potholes. Seriously, fixing potholes can win an election. In 2015, University of North Carolina-Wilmington professors found that every pothole complaint lodged within six months of Election Day reduced an incumbent’s vote total by an average of 0.2 percentage points. Read more here ➡ https://bit.ly/3Vly5xm Addressing potholes goes beyond just winning elections; it demonstrates effective governance. The condition of roads, including the presence of potholes, is often seen as an indicator of a city or state's overall management. When voters observe elected officials struggling with seemingly simple tasks like filling potholes, they begin to doubt their ability to handle more complex issues. The linked article from Time discusses how to potentially fix the primary process in the United States. It begins by discussing the failures of the current system, such as extensive waiting times, confusing rules, and an incorrect emphasis on small states early in the process. Essentially, these flaws make the current primary process unrepresentative of the national electorate. The article offers three primary strategies to reform this process: 1. Regional primaries: This strategy suggests grouping states by region and having them vote in sequential waves. This way, no single state would go first, and the influence would be more evenly spread across the country. 2. Ranked-choice voting: This system lets voters rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the candidate with the fewest number of first-preference votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates based on the second preferences of the eliminated candidate's voters. This process continues until one candidate receives more than 50% of the continuing votes. 3. Automatic voter registration: Under this system, every eligible citizen would be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18. This would simplify the process and likely lead to higher voter turnout. The article suggests these changes could make the primary process more democratic and representative of the diverse population in the United States. The author believes such changes can increase voter turnout, reduce partisanship, and make the process of selecting presidential candidates more fair and transparent.

IMO one of the core ways politics strays back into the "sanity" lane is via constituent communication. Each election cycle the landscape becomes more and more clear in that whoever is the best "communicator" will have a massive election advantage: "About six-in-ten Americans say that if they contacted their member of the U.S. House of Representatives with a problem it is either not very likely (40%) or not likely at all (21%) they would get help addressing it. Just 7% say their representative would be very likely to help, while 30% say this would be somewhat likely."
6. Quality and responsiveness of elected officials

Why the left may tell "centrists" to pound sand. "I don’t think you can understand why the left threatens electoral support without fully appreciating the problems created by a world where the center-left’s understanding of the proper role of the left is to provide endless confidence and supply rather than to share in the power. "I wrote something similar to this back in 2015 in a post titled 'What is the left supposed to do electorally?' In that post, I mused about the fact that the center-left accuses the left of behaving recklessly no matter what it does in elections. If the left runs as a separate party, this is characterized as reckless vote-splitting. If the left runs in party primaries and wins, this is characterized as recklessly risking general election electability. But if you can’t run as a third party or run in the primary, then what are you supposed to do? "The answer of course is the same as above: support the center-left even as the center-left’s position is that it can and should reject everything you want to do. Not only should you not push the center-left on its policy positions, but you also should not challenge them in elections. Just provide the confidence and supply. "Needless to say, this is not a very effective way to approach someone who you want to partner with. The center-left is very good at spinning up stories about how the wacky left is acting in a wacky way, but very bad at seeing how their approach to working with the left is repulsive and wacky in its own way. "As noted already, I think the theoretical way you solve this problem is through power-sharing where the left is given a certain dispensation over policy and personnel that is commensurate with its size. In a world where the left could trust that this would happen, it probably would focus more on growing its voter base and turning them out for the Democratic party and less on threatening to withhold votes. But for as long as the center-left’s attitude is that it should be allowed to govern however it wants rather than share power proportionally, many on the left will not see the point of cooperation."

The Electoral College is a joke. ❌ The Electoral College can result in a president winning without the popular vote, as seen in 2000 and 2016. This contradicts the democratic principle that each vote should carry equal weight. ❌ Candidates tend to focus their campaigns on a handful of competitive "swing states" while ignoring states considered safe for either party. This leaves many voters feeling neglected and unheard. ❌ In non-competitive states, voters may feel their vote doesn't matter, potentially decreasing participation in the democratic process. ❌ Since most states allocate electors on a winner-take-all basis, the effects of partisan redistricting can be magnified at the national level. A direct popular vote would be more democratic and better reflect the will of the people. #Voting #ElectoralCollage #UnitedStates #Democracy #PopularVote

Great piece Jared Alper! Indeed, #Independents are Rising! I'm not a closet R or D, and I reject the terrible choices offered by our binary duopoly. The self-serving political industry loves to hate on us, or act like we don't exist. Here is a short sample of some of the names states (or the industry) give to independent #voters: Declined to state (DTS), No party affiliation (NPA), No party preference (NPP), Nonpartisan, Unaffiliated and "double haters." Over 27 MIL Independent Voters cannot even vote in their own PUBLIC, taxpayer-funded closed primary #elections. Where's the moral outrage around this blatant #taxationwithoutrepresentation? No outrage because the politics industry has poisoned far too many. City by City, State by State, we will continue our mission to #LetAllVotersVote / #LetAllVeteransVote ... #LetUsVote!
What will the parties do as more and more voters go independent?
