For those living with OA, or supporting someone who does, it's crucial to explore and discuss support strategies that can facilitate a more comfortable and productive workplace. Here are a few suggestions: 1. 𝗘𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Customizing the workspace with ergonomic tools, like supportive chairs and adjustable desks, can significantly reduce strain and discomfort. 2. 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Flexible work hours or the option to work from home can help individuals manage their pain more effectively, allowing for breaks as needed. 3. 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A culture of open dialogue between employees and management about health needs and accommodations can foster understanding and support. 4. 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: Access to physical support tools, like wrist rests or standing mats, can provide relief and prevent further strain. Musculoskeletal disorders linked to poor ergonomics are on the rise among office workers. Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain, and neck pain are becoming common, leading to higher healthcare expenses, increased absenteeism, and costly treatment and rehabilitation. These issues also bring significant mental and physical distress to affected individuals. Although optimizing workstation design is vital for reducing ergonomic risks, encouraging employees to adopt healthier behaviors presents an ongoing challenge. Getting someone to get up and move around the office is like trying to steer a parked car. You can explain the importance of driving (movement) for reaching a destination (better health), but without starting the engine (finding a personal motivator), the car stays in place. Until individuals find their own compelling reason to ‘start their engine,’ they often remain stationary despite knowing the benefits of regular movement. So, why not switch the "Eyes Guard" application on your computer on, set reminders of every 30 - 40 minutes to get up, move and stretch! #aaohs #ergonomic #healthandwellbeing #occupationalhealth
