What are subject communities? Why do they matter? What do good ones look like? And can you even measure them?
--> What are they?
A subject community is a collective enterprise where teachers can get excited and learn more about their subject. So they can teach it even better.
--> Why do they matter?
Subject communities achieve:
- Improved subject knowledge
- Robust curriculum
- Effective teaching
- Better student outcomes
Put simply, expert teachers get better results for your kids.
But...
...to be effective, they need time, space and encouragement from the top.
--> So what do good ones look like?
They:
- fix meaning with field of discursivity
- are subject specific and recognise disciplinary differences
- collaborative within and across schools
- Support both curriculum planning and delivery
They:
- increase engagement
- spread good ideas
- improve working relationships between teachers in schools and between schools
Isn't that all a bit nebulous?
Well, yes.
That's why we need to ask...
--> Can you even measure them?
