Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa’s Post

Kua takitahi ngā whetū o Matariki i te rironga atu o tō tātou Kiingi, a Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII. Ko Te Papa Tongarewa e tangi mōteatea atu nei ki a Kīngi Tūheitia e takoto tīraha ana i tōna marae, i Tūrangawaewae. It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Kiingi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII early this morning. He was a great leader who advocated for Te Ao Māori, Pacific relations and international relationships that brought unity and strength to Aotearoa. Te Papa has a long-standing relationship with the Kiingitanga, having marked significant events, including the opening of Te Papa, and the ‘Tai timu, Tai pari: Tainui: Journey of a People’ iwi-in-residence exhibition from 2011-2014. In 2007, with the support of the Kiingitanga, the Mauri Ora exhibition of Māori treasures from Te Papa was opened at the National Museum of Tokyo, marking the King’s first international engagement. Over the coming days, we will have a memorial display with books, on Level 2 and on Rongomaraeroa Marae Level 4 where visitors are invited to share thoughts and messages to Kiingi Tūheitia. The books will be presented to the Kiingitanga at a later date. As a mark of our deepest respect, the Tino Rangatiratanga flag and the New Zealand flag are flying at half-mast on our forecourt.
