One of the most important moments in a charity auction is right at the very start! 🎤 As an auctioneer, my top priority is to get everyone’s attention before the bidding begins, especially in long rooms where guests can easily be distracted by conversations or the distance from the stage. 📢 Sometimes, you’ve got to get creative to make sure everyone’s focused. I’m not afraid to do whatever it takes to grab attention—even if it means standing on a chair in the middle of the room with a wireless mic! Why? With activists' pressure mounting, both Hay and the Edinburgh international book festivals have cut ties with their main sponsor, the investment firm Baillie Gifford. Activists were trying to pressure the investment firm to divest from fossil fuels rather than the festivals reneging their sponsorships. But this never happened (and would never have given the timeframes). This raises some interesting questions: How can charities use tainted money?
