Today, I had the privilege of attending the 2024 STEM Career and Internship Fair at UC Santa Cruz. Engaging with recruiters and delving into discussions about potential job opportunities was an enriching experience. One proactive step I took prior to the event was applying for relevant positions in advance. By doing so, I ensured that recruiters had access to my resume and pertinent information, facilitating seamless conversations and maximizing the impact of our interactions. As I reflect on this experience, I recognize the importance of further proactive measures to enhance future career fair engagements. 👨🏾🎓 January is Internship and Job Fair season! 👩🏾🎓 As many corporations and businesses seek out talent on college 🎓 campuses across the country, diversity and inclusion must become a priority when meeting and interviewing prospects. Even selecting which schools and locations to hold career fairs plays an integral role in the demographics of students that will attend. As we aspire to break down systemic barriers that systemic populations face when entering STEM/STEAM careers, the barrier of access must be addressed. Participating in internship/career fairs at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-Serving Institutions is a significant step in ensuring these vital positions are accessible to all. What steps can your business take to progress the call for more diversity in your field?

Not too early to start looking for opportunities next summer! Even as a freshman, start looking at internship descriptions and consider what jumps out to you now. Take notes about requirements and how you can be a “fit.”

What is the company culture like? 8. Have students returned for multiple internships/seasonal positions? 9. What do you enjoy most about working for the company? 10. Having an elevator pitch ready for our annual Bellevue College Networking & Job fair this Wednesday, May 8th, will ensure you maximize your time with each employer! 1. Start by introducing yourself. "Hello my name is _______, and I am a student at Bellevue College." 2. Next, provide your educational background. "I am currently studying _____," or "I have a degree in _____." 3. It is important that you are upfront with your objectives. "I am seeking a job or internship in ______." Include the position or industry that you are seeking. 4. Aside from your background, it is also important to provide employers with relevant skills and strengths. "I am skilled at_____." Remember to include skills that would be relevant to the position you are seeking. 5. Now, provide employers with the opportunity to tell YOU what they offer. "What opportunities are available?" Remember, this is just the foundation to build your elevator pitch. It’s not a great idea to “trust the process” if you don’t have a process in place. A mistake I made when I was looking for my first internship back in 2018. Here are three strategies I would adopt if I were to start today: 1. Take breaks after every 10 high-quality applications: I realize the importance of pacing myself during the application process. By incorporating regular breaks, I would have maintained focus and prevented burnout, ultimately leading to more effective applications. 2. Personalize messages to recruiters: Rather than sending generic applications, I would prioritize crafting tailored messages to recruiters. This personalized approach would have helped me stand out from the competition and demonstrate genuine interest in the opportunities available. 3. Attend every personal development/career fair of my university: Despite conflicting schedules, I would make attending every university career fair a non-negotiable priority, even if it meant missing soccer practice. I would communicate with my coach and seek their understanding, emphasizing the significance of these events in shaping my professional journey.
