Owl for future sustainable transportation MAHLE is presenting a world first at #IAATransportation 2024: using nature as a model, MAHLE developed a bionic high-performance fan making demanding fuel cell and battery electric commercial vehicle applications significantly quieter. When optimizing its ventilation blades with the support of AI, MAHLE engineers took inspiration from the wings of an owl: One of the quietest birds in the world, the owl’s feathers have a noise-reducing effect. The bionic fan blades can reduce the fan noise of a truck by up to 4 dB(A)—cutting the sound output by more than half on average. This significant reduction solves another challenge for e-mobility: during full load or fast charging of vehicles, reduced fan noise levels increase comfort for drivers and residents alike. In addition, the fan is also significantly more efficient than conventional designs, packing a 10 percent better performance and a 10 percent lighter design. “We learn from nature; it inspires us in many areas! We were already successful with our bionic battery cooling plate, and this has now helped us a lot in optimizing our fan,” says Dr. Dr.-Ing. Uli Christian Blessing, Vice President Product Development Thermal Management at MAHLE. “With the help of AI, we analyzed the special features of bats, swordfish and many other sources of inspiration from nature and finally landed on the owl, the silent hunter, as the main model for our new fan.” The design of the fan blades is based on owl wings and feathers. This minimizes noise turbulence, making the fan much quieter and more efficient. “You can imagine the sound reduction power of our fan to be like turning off one of the speakers on a stereo system,” Blessing explains. MAHLE presents the bionic fan to the public for the first time at IAA TRANSPORTATION from September 17–22 in Hannover. #MAHLEgoesbionic #MAHLE #ThermalManagement #BionicCoolingFan #BionicDesign #SustainableTransportation #Pioniergeist #Innovation #WeShapeFutureMobility

Some manufacturers offer piezo stages with exchangable motors, or 'drive units'. 🔧 This is very useful... ... if your motors often break. ⚠️💥 At Xeryon, we went for a different approach. We designed an extremely durable motor, so you never have to replace it in the first place. 🤷 Our motors achieve lifetimes of over 50 million cycles, or 1000 kilometers, making our piezo stages the most durable in the world. #ultrasonic #piezo #motor #piezomotor #durability #linearstage #rotarystage

Did you know electric cars have been on the road since 1839? Picture the late 19th century when Andreas Flocken unveiled the remarkable 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻. This four-wheeled wonder, born in 1888, marked the advent of true #electric cars. Flocken's innovation expanded beyond conventional designs, experimenting with an electric motor generating 0.9 kW (1 hp). With its high-wheeled carriage wagon, iron-tyred wheels, and a top speed of 15 km/h, the 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 laid the groundwork for the future of electric vehicles. Fast forward to 1899, where "𝗟𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲", an electric speed record car, roared onto the scene. Crafted and piloted by the Belgian engineer 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘇𝘆, this electric marvel became the first street vehicle to break the 100 km/h barrier on April 29, 1899, in Achères, near Paris. As we explore the roots of #emobility, it's fascinating to see how these early electric pioneers set the stage for the incredible electric vehicles we drive today. From leather belts transferring power in 1888 to the cutting-edge technology propelling "𝗟𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲", the journey has been nothing short of revolutionary. Join us in celebrating the spirit of innovation that has driven the evolution of electric mobility. At weisstechnik, we continue to contribute to this electric journey, embracing the legacy of these pioneering vehicles. #weisstechnik #Electromobility #LaJamaisContente #FlockenElectrowagen Source: https://lnkd.in/efPAYkzx

Porsche has recently patented a new six-stroke engine, an innovation that adds two extra strokes to the traditional four-stroke internal combustion cycle. This design includes an additional compression and power stroke, enhancing both efficiency and horsepower. The six-stroke cycle follows a modified pattern of "suck, squeeze, bang, squeeze, bang, blow" instead of the conventional "suck, squeeze, bang, blow." One key feature of Porsche's six-stroke design is its use of a crankshaft mounted on planetary gears, which allows for variable compression and two different positions for the pistons at both the top and bottom of their stroke. This configuration is intended to improve the fuel burn and reduce emissions, potentially making the engine more efficient than standard four-stroke models. Although the concept of a six-stroke engine has existed since the 19th century, past designs were often deemed too complex or costly for widespread use. However, Porsche’s version could be part of its strategy to extend the life of internal combustion engines, possibly in combination with synthetic fuels. Despite these promising advancements, there are still questions about the practicality of this engine due to its complexity and cost considerations.
