An embedded culture of overwork and unpaid overtime is taking a severe toll on businesses and workers across the UK, according to new research released today by Protime UK. The research, conducted among 2,000 UK employees, found excessive workloads and unrealistic expectations from managers are driving a work environment that undermines employee, motivation, productivity, retention and overall business performance. The study found that half (54%) of UK employees put in between half a day and four days per month of unpaid overtime each month equating to 19 million days of uncompensated work. Poor management and inadequate leadership skills are clearly contributing to these poor working conditions. You can help your team by ensuring they are managed by individuals with strong leadership abilities. 🚨 19m hours of free overtime? 🚨 Shocking statistics highlight a UK work culture crisis! A recent study by Protime UK has found a staggering 54 percent of UK employees report working between half a day and four days of unpaid overtime each month, amounting to 19 million days of uncompensated labour annually. The findings also indicate that one in five employees plans to leave their current job within the next six months to escape the pressures of overwork. Additionally, nearly half (49%) refuse to take on extra work, and 42 percent avoid pursuing management responsibilities due to the same issue. Hybrid workers are also found to be more vulnerable with 33 percent of employees being more likely to work additional unpaid hours when working from home. It's a ticking time bomb that needs defusing. Respecting employee time, ensuring fair workload distribution, and nurturing a healthy balance isn't just nice - it's essential. Unpaid overtime is still a reality for millions of employees in the UK and worldwide. While there are successful examples of implementing a 4-day working week with the same (if not more salary), unfortunately 19th century practices are still alive and well... here is a blogpost based on the topic of unpaid overtime from my Ph.D. thesis.
Uncovering the Hidden Costs of Unpaid Overtime: Insights from our CBISS member and theme lead Dr Elena Papagiannaki. Her research reveals over 5 million UK workers regularly put in unpaid overtime, totaling £31.2 billion annually. This calls for fair treatment and policy reform. Unpaid overtime may seem like a short-term solution to pressing deadlines and project deliverables, but its long-term effects can be detrimental. It can lead to burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and a higher turnover rate. Moreover, it sends a message that an organization values output over the well-being of its people, which can harm the company's reputation and make it harder to attract top talent. Should it be People Over Output? Or Output Over People? Addressing unpaid overtime is not just about improving efficiency or productivity—it's about respecting our teams and valuing their well-being. Let's commit to being leaders who prioritize the health of our teams. After all, our greatest asset is our people, and it's time we start treating them as such. Hi. Transforming Organizations through Strategic HR Leadership | Driving Success through People Excellence & Organizational Innovation
Regardless of your employees' dedication and diligence, there are times during the day when they require breaks to nourish and rejuvenate themselves. Employee breaks not only promote workforce health and well-being but also play a vital role in sustaining productivity and motivation levels throughout the day. Employee breaks regulated by the FLSA cover rest breaks and meal periods. Rest breaks, typically 5-20 minutes, are paid and crucial for maintaining productivity. Meal periods, lasting 30 minutes or more, are unpaid if employees are relieved of duties, but paid if work interrupts. The FLSA doesn't define break scheduling but regulates overtime eligibility: exempt employees aren't eligible for overtime, while non-exempt employees must be paid extra for hours beyond 40 per week and are entitled to short rest breaks. In summary, while the FLSA doesn't dictate break scheduling, it's crucial for employers to ensure compliance with overtime regulations and provide necessary breaks for non-exempt employees. What's your take on this essential aspect of employee management? Share your thoughts and learn more about how to navigate FLSA-regulated breaks for optimal scheduling and shift management. At the end of a recent three-month engagement, employees were presented with options that reduced the excessive workload while at the same time, guaranteeing them regular long weekend breaks. The high OT level was in fact the greatest hurdle to change. While many employees openly complained about overtime, there was real fear that any change would reduce their personal earnings that they had become accustomed to. The new schedule options improved predictability, so people could plan ahead for days off. At the same time, the new schedules provide flexibility to work overtime for those that were interested in doing so. Approximately 50% of the employees chose to work an alternative schedule, and the rest chose to remain where they are at. Based on our experience, some of those unwilling to try something new are likely to change their mind once they see the new schedule in operation. In the end, CCG will be able to help our client give their people schedules that better match their work/life balance with increased predictability and flexibility. #schedules #HR #workforcemanagement #humanresources #highovertime #worklifebalance #capacityutilization

Earlier this week, Protime UK released their study on unpaid overtime. Some findings that stood out to me..: -One in five employees plans to leave their current job within the next six months to escape the pressures of overwork -42% avoid pursuing management responsibilities due to the same issue -Hybrid Workers are more vulnerable: 33% of employees are more likely to work additional unpaid hours when working from home -Unrealistic Workloads: 28% of respondents report being unable to complete their job within regular working hours, leading to extended workdays -Inadequate Managerial Support: 27% of employees believe managers should ensure work is more evenly distributed, while 20% find the work delegated to them unrealistic given the available time The research is based on a survey of 2,000 workers. I think it can be tempting to put in unpaid overtime in today's job market where there's a lot of uncertainty, and high level of competition for available roles. But employers should really consider the negative impacts of employees putting in a lot of overtime - Protime's research indicates that it's actually detrimental to business performance, and more importantly, to the employees overall health and job satisfaction. #overtime #jobs #jobmarket

The average UK employee clocks up 18 days of unpaid overtime a year, with many more individuals working for free outside of their contracted hours than there are individuals receiving additional pay, new research shows. The Ciphr study, which polled 1,000 UK workers, found that those who regularly work over their hours clock up just over three extra hours per week – which amounts to around 18 days over the course of a year – with 11 per cent putting in an additional five hours per week. The employees most likely to work the longest extra hours unpaid include senior managers (averaging 4.1 hours a week), 25-34-year-olds (3.5 hours), remote workers (3.5 hours), and those working in legal services and education (4.1 hours and 3.9 hours respectively). And there are significantly more employees who work unpaid overtime (49 per cent) than those who do receive overtime pay (23 per cent). What are your thoughts?
