#RFP: To support the planning of activities of the Food Culture Alliance (FCA) – Kenya, GAIN conducted a series of focus group discussions (FGDs) to build on learnings from the Kenya Food Culture exploring aspirational consumption (food and non-food) and understanding how status-markers vary across audiences (rural, urban, male, female). Specifically, we aimed to build on learnings around aspirational food and non-food consumption and to explore perceptions of rural and urban lifestyles and if/how they relate to status (e.g. tradition and modernity dichotomy). The purpose of this RFP is to engage services of a Service Provider to conduct in-depth re-analysis of the FGD transcripts. The objectives are to: i) identify and analyze the values, beliefs, and norms associated with aspirational lifestyles, and describe what that aspirational lifestyle looks like; ii) understand the role of food and health within the context of a aspirational lifestyle, and iii) analyze the ideas, feelings, artifacts, behaviors associated with the combination of traditional and modern worlds. Let’s take a look back to one of the first PVR applications granted under the 1987 Act – the Cluthagold apricot. The Prunus armeniaca variety application was granted on 16 June 1988, to The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited. It underwent one year of growing trials in Central Otago. Described as a cross between a Moorpark and a Sundrop apricot, this is a large, oval shaped apricot. This variety is still being produced today. This is one of Tanzania's most beloved culinary delights, known lovingly as 'chips mayai'. It's essentially an omelette fried with chips embedded in it. Done right, it's the stuff of dining legend! My first recollection of the same was sampling it in my early adulthood after partying late into the night in Dar Es Salaam, and we would swing by some well-known street food joints to grab them. On the side of the chips mayai is what would normally refer to as frankfurters or hotdog sausages in Kenya, but in Tanzania, this is 'sosej'. It's important not to confuse this with Kenya's world famous Farmers Choice 'sausages'. If you order sausages in 'TZ', you will be served with sosej. I'm in Arusha to attend this year's edition of the East African Public Relations Week or EAPRW on invitation of the event organizer where I will be on a panel to discuss the implications and considerations of Artificial Intelligence or AI on the profession and practice of Public Relations or PR in the context of East Africa and beyond. Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise to find chips mayai on the hotel menu after arriving at the conference venue. It's possibly been as long as 15 or even 20 years since I last sampled this simple yet somehow iconic Tanzanian dish.
