The three things you need to know about clays! Clays are small. Clays are NOT spheres. And clays are charged particles. Clays matter for how you manage your tailings in your mining operations, and Dr. Kaminsky and the team at the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability can help you do just that. If your company deals with tailings, we can help you create an impact for better, more efficient, and more sustainable operations. P. Eng. passionate about improving the performance of oil sand tailings via collaboration, innovation and education
If you work with clays (ie materials that are plastic at a given water content and harden when fired) especially clay minerals here are some simple things you should keep in mind when thinking about them. 1) Clays are small (most classification schemes look at clay size as <2 microns equivalent settling diameter- and yes the settling part matters!) 2) clays are not spheres - unlike rock flours/fine quartz which might be in this size fraction the clay minerals are not spheres 3) clays are charged- majority of clay minerals have a net negative charge and even neutral clays (like kaolinite) will have lots of charged edges!
