The right people in the right seat is everything. We just hired a director of recruiting who helped us 10x the business. This only happened because we fired the person previously in the role. Here are 5 lessons I learned from this experience: 1. Competence does not equal right person for the job 2. Growth mindset & leadership > just getting the job done 3. Full visibility into the operations → better decisions 4. Hiring someone with previous experience → new ideas to our team 5. Hire for the future. Hiring Managers: Don't make false promises you can't keep!!! You are hiring a PERSON who is RELYING on that promise! A senior director I worked with was promised he’d be on the promotion track for VP when he was hired. They said it would happen within a year. Did it happen? Nope. What happened instead? His role got “reimagined” and he essentially got a demotion. Hiring managers are doing whatever it takes to fulfill their KPIs, including making promises they can’t keep. But these candidates have lives and families! They’re in a volatile hiring climate. They’re changing their lives to go and work for these companies. What an absolute tragedy that they’re being treated like commodities, and not people.
