Yesterday was #WorldYouthMentalHealthDay, and I spent it delivering a 2-day Youth Mental Health course, which concludes today.
As I reflect on this day and beyond, I recognise how vital it is for us to step up in protecting the mental health and wellbeing of our young people. Their wellbeing impacts us all—our communities, creativity, productivity, profitability, and even compliance with regulations like GDPR. Young people influence us individually, locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.
As a social entrepreneur and a mother, ensuring young people’s wellbeing is at the heart of SVH Inc. CIC’s innovative services. Without addressing youth mental health, workplace wellbeing solutions lose their effectiveness.
In fact, the 2024 Deloitte report estimates that poor mental health costs UK employers around £51 billion annually. While this is an improvement from £56 billion in 2021, it is still higher than the £45 billion in 2019. The primary drivers of these costs include absenteeism, presenteeism (when employees work but are not fully productive), and staff turnover. Notably, presenteeism alone accounts for £24 billion of the costs.
The report also reveals how children’s mental health impacts working parents. Concerns about their children’s mental health cost employers an additional £8 billion per year, as parents report reduced performance, absenteeism, and, in some cases, the need to leave their jobs entirely to focus on caregiving.
Investing in mental health pays off—with a £4.70 return for every £1 spent on wellbeing initiatives. This underscores why our services at SVH Inc. CIC are a win-win for everyone involved.
