The Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) has taken delivery of its first BoxerHeavy Weapons Carrier 8x8 vehicle from Rheinmetall. This delivery, occurring just three weeks after the contract was signed, initiates an extensive integrated verification test phase to assess the vehicle’s compatibility with the Bundeswehr’s Customer Product Management (CPM) standards. The Boxer Heavy Weapon Carrier vehicle will undergo a rigorous assessment over the coming months, involving operational parameters and functional limits. This phase is critical, as it encompasses a collaboration between the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), future troop users, and industry representatives. Their goal is to rapidly identify and rectify any potential deficiencies, ensuring the vehicle meets the stringent requirements for operational deployment among troops. The introduction of the Boxer Heavy Weapon Carrier vehicle marks a strategic shift in the Bundeswehr’s approach, aiming to bridge the operational gap between light paratrooper troops and heavy armored units. This new vehicle offers a blend of speed and substantial firepower, essential for rapid response and sustained resilience on the battlefield. Production is expected to escalate, with the first batch of 19 vehicles scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025 and an annual output of 25 vehicles starting in 2026 at RDA’s facilities. Developed by Rheinmetall for the German Army, the Wiesel 1 has served as a stalwart in the realm of light armored warfare since its inception in the late 1980s, initially tailored for air-transportable support in airborne operations. Over the years, it underwent numerous iterations to fulfill diverse battlefield roles, including variants armed with a 20mm automatic cannon and TOW anti-tank missile system. The acquisition of these vehicles finds support in a bilateral contract inked between Germany and Australia, with the Australian Department of Defense assuming the mantle of the primary contractor, and Rheinmetall Defense Australia (RDA) stepping in as a subcontractor. Speaking personally, whilst the range may not seem very long what you have is a relatively wide beam, meaning simultaneous engagement of multiple drones is possible per single firing. As drones become smaller, smarter, and operate in larger swarms this type of counter weapon becomes increasingly important as part of layered multi modal effector solutions.

The future of the UK's drone-killer radio wave weapon looks promising. The Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW) system, which disables enemy electronics and downs drones using radio waves, is being developed to enhance battlefield protection. It offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional missile systems, with a significant operational advantage. The pylon could contain a hardware module that handles this with some sort of a short-range wireless device, like a Bluetooth system, that connects with the pad in the cockpit wireless. While this may be far from a traditional military-grade solution, it would make integration seamless without having to wire the aircraft specifically for these new munitions.”
