IS THIS INNOVATION? Every so often there is loud hosanna of self congratulation from a corporate department proclaiming the launch of a new innovation. And then you get Smirnoff Mango & Passion Fruit Twist. But is that really an innovation? To me it's something you'd knock off on a Friday afternoon, after lunch. And it would be as cheap as chips to produce. But innovation it definitely isn't. I wonder how much it cost to bring that to market? Here's a list of some ideas that appear in my book. I'd be interested to canvass opinion on which can be classed as innovation and which not. And why. And if there are other brands out there that people regard as genuinely innovative, let me know. I think agreeing on a definition of innovation is important. BUFFALO JUMP : A Canadian whisky positioned to compete with Bourbon brands. It was described as 'Mellow-Mash', versus the traditional 'Sour-Mash'. CARIGNAC : This was an attempt to establish Bordeaux, with its fine wine reputation, as an alternative prestige brandy region to Cognac. J&B SUB-ZERO : The first whisky specially blended to be served straight from the freezer and consumed frozen. SHERIDAN'S : A unique two-stage pack that delivers coffee cream liqueur that blends the coffee and cream before serving.. STERLING RED CHARDONNAY : A wine that exploited the legal requirement that for wines to be designated Chardonnay, they were required to contain 75% of that grape. The other 25% was a RED wine. CIROC : A vodka made from grapes, not grain or potato. TANQUERAY TEN : A gin aimed at vodka drinkers via its fresh, fruity taste. It avoids the harsh juniper 'hit' generically associated with gin. WHISKY GALORE 8 : J&B Martini Blend First, there was the gin martini. Then came vodka. Now, anything goes. You can even have an espresso martini. So one day I thought, why not a whisky martini? Let's create a Scotch specially designed to be served as the base for a martini. Scotch can be as diverse as astringent, peaty Lagavulin and soft, estery Famous Grouse. There's enough variety in the hundreds of distilleries in Scotland to produce a unique martini blend. Our martini whisky must be utterly different. We would employ a world class gin distiller as the lead. Because that's where the martini began. And a brilliant whisky person as a second-in-com mand. Someone who knew every distillery in Scotland. And finally, a mixologist to provide the magic touch. And we'd start in New York, where the martini began. Where people would be receptive to a new idea. And we'd bring back J&B and make it famous again. It was once the biggest-selling Scotch in America. J&B Martini Blend hasn't happened yet. I am waiting patiently to see if anyone will take it on. It is no longer my idea. It's anybody's! Go for it. That story isn't in my book - yet. But J&B is one of my 'hero' brands. Check it out on https://lnkd.in/eyRzmuK for a stack of brand stories, winners and losers. And lots of fun. #innovation #ideas #themartini #whisky #drinksbusiness

Transformational Leader | Commercial Executive | Decisive Strategist | Innovative Marketer | Brand Strategist
Steve Jobs said: “Our job is to figure out what [customers] are going to want before they do.” Building a luxury brand in the wine industry is about creating something extraordinary and novel, something beyond consumer imagination. Wine brands find success not merely by crafting wines that please consumers' tastes. To excel in this premiumization game, wine brands require a unique, compelling story that sets them apart from others competing for the same cultural prestige. Everything begins with the winemakers' vision for the wine style they aim to produce. It's crucial to craft an inspirational, persuasive story. Subsequently, winemakers share their vision with critics and the press, who then convey that story to us, the consumers, if they find it appealing. The takeaway: Great wines are considered exceptional not only because they taste extraordinary, although taste is undoubtedly a factor, but also because of what we believe about them and how we are inspired by the storytelling surrounding the wine. #wine #brandbuilding #brandstrategy #strategicmarketing #branddevelopment #brandadvocacy
