On this #ponderousthursday I am keen to understand educators, pedagogues, pastoral staff ( and of course all the other fabulous humans working in education I have missed) opinions on our democratic processes in our schooling and education systems for the children & young people ......... 🟣 Do you think our systems are truly democratic for our children and young people, and if they are not, should they be? My reading today, focusing again on my revered philosophical approach to education, "The Reggio Emilia Approach", which is underpinned by democratic experimentalism states: 🟣 "A democratic society is precisely one in which the purpose of education is not given, but is a constant topic for discussion and deliberation. The current political climate in many Western countries has made it increasingly difficult to have a democratic discussion about the purpose of education" I feel this more than ever as our schools increase their use of punitive measures to blend all children into a uniformed, submissive, mechanical man. #school #behaviour #education #send #alternativeprovision #reggioemilia

📚Reading is Knowledge : Teaching a person to read is a political act. One of the most discussed topics in education today is that of the so-called ‘knowledge curriculum’. Its most famous proponent is E D Hirsch, who has written extensively on the subject. Hirsch argues that depriving students – especially poorer students - of the ‘cultural capital’ that middle and upper class children have access to perpetuates inequality and injustice. Instead, he believes that the curriculum should reflect ‘powerful knowledge’ that enables students to gain the same access to higher education and working opportunities that those in better-off circumstances tend to have. We work with schools to eradicate adolescent illiteracy so that no student leaves school unable to read well, regardless of their background. If you would like to see these results for your most vulnerable students you can book a discovery call the link in the comments below. #literacy #reading #teaching #education

'Education is a powerful tool that has the potential to transform lives and societies. It is a fundamental human right, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and is essential for the exercise of other rights.' While it is agreed that education can help reduce poverty, promote economic growth, and improve social mobility, not everyone has access to education. Sharon Ogbuehi in this article, 'Education and Development: Challenges Facing Educational Systems Globally' looked at some of the challenges such as Strikes, Absenteeism, and others facing the educational system around the world. This is happening on May 3. I will be in discussion with Dr Amanuel Elias (Deakin University) and Dr Sophie Rudolph (The University of Melbourne) on schooling and anti-racism in settler colonial Australia. The seminar aims to explore and examine anti-racism efforts in schooling through the lens of difficult knowledge. Difficult knowledge is ‘a concept meant to signify both representations of social trauma in curriculum and the individual’s encounters with them in pedagogy’ (Pitt and Britzman, 2003, p. 755). It is used ‘to conjure the affective labour that teachers and learners exert when encountering curriculum that addresses forms of social trauma such as violence, racism, and genocide’ (Dadvand, Cahill & Zembylas, 2022, p. 311). In-person only. More details below. Register via: https://lnkd.in/d8y-pkt8

From the archives... Every believer involved in education (home education, Christian school, and public school) should understand the foundational vision for institutional schooling. This understanding should feed our own vision for the biblical implementation of education, including what things to avoid, which is inevitably affecting the next generation of believers. #HomeEducation #homeschool #homeschooling #education #GetOutNow #PublicSchoolExit #ChristianEducation #EdcuationIsDiscipleship #ChristianHomeschoolRevolution https://lnkd.in/g3YbCN5R
