📢 Did you hear the latest announcement? The National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Trust and Natural England have revealed a new strategic initiative called Nature in Towns and Cities. What is Nature in Towns and Cities? The new initiative will improve access to nature across 100 UK towns and cities by supporting organisations to put nature and green space at the centre of their priorities and investments. The initiative aims to improve access to green space for 5 million people by: 🌳 Enhancing 1,000 existing green or blue spaces 🌳 Developing 1,000 pocket parks in neighbourhoods lacking green space 🌳 Creating 100 major new green spaces from urban centres to their fringe Overall, 10 million people will receive everyday benefits as a result of integrating green spaces for nature and heritage with the urban fabric. The initiative will ensure community priorities remain at the forefront of planning, and the resulting spaces are a source of pride and bring benefits like climate resilience to the spaces that need them the most. How can my organisation benefit? By joining the Nature Towns and Cities Network, local authorities, and voluntary and community organisations will be able to access a range of events and resources, as well as receive peer support. Getting accredited as part of an upcoming pilot scheme in 2025, designed to officially recognise towns and cities integrating nature into their planning and communities. This accreditation will provide assurance to investors and help unlock financial resources. Receive funding from a £15 million fund, with grants of £250,000 to £1 million available for local authorities and community partners to create additional capacity while planning for nature in their towns and cities. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is noon on 12 November 2024. Creating a dynamic rural parking infrastructure that integrates with community needs and enhances local connectivity is a promising concept. Here are some insights and considerations: 1. **Flexible Use of Parking Areas**: Implementing shared-use agreements among different institutions (schools, churches, community halls) can optimize parking space utilization throughout the day. This approach minimizes unused capacity and supports community activities. 2. **Transport Interchange**: Linking parking areas with bus stops, bike lanes, and walking routes encourages sustainable transportation choices. This multimodal approach reduces reliance on individual vehicles, easing traffic congestion and promoting healthier lifestyles. 3. **Placemaking and Community Engagement**: By enhancing existing facilities like parks and community centers through improved access and connectivity, you foster a sense of place and community pride. This strengthens social bonds and encourages local residents to participate in activities. 4. **Biodiversity and Environment**: Thoughtful design can integrate green spaces and biodiversity corridors into parking areas, enhancing local ecology. Rain gardens, native plantings, and wildlife habitats can mitigate environmental impacts while beautifying the area. 5. **Maximizing Existing Infrastructure**: Leveraging already paved surfaces for multiple uses reduces the need for additional development, conserving resources and preserving rural aesthetics. Implementing these ideas requires collaboration among stakeholders, including local governments, community groups, and transportation authorities. By focusing on adaptability, sustainability, and community engagement, rural areas can develop vibrant, interconnected spaces that benefit residents and visitors alike. #RuralDevelopment #CommunityInfrastructure #SustainableTransport
Travelling around rural areas this summer I was struck by the amount of parking areas in edge of settlements which have different peak usages. When schools are starting church car parks are empty. When schools and businesses are shut weekend summer weddings are taking place. When sports and community halls are in use for events in the evenings church and school grounds are empty. Finding a way to share usage of existing rural parking infrastructure while linking bus, bike and walking routes could create a kind of community infrastructure/ transport infrastructure interchange. At the same time enhancing and linking existing facilities to aid placemaking, strengthen rural community links, enrich local biodiversity and maximise use of existing sealed surfaces. Imagined landscape. #ruralcommunities #ruraldevelopment #transport #sustainabledevelopment

https://lnkd.in/g_VW2hHw Today the City of SB hosted an advisory committee mtg to guide the "State Street Master Plan". Of big focus is the issue of whether to (further) reopen parts of lower State to car traffic. I haven't been living under a rock, and viscerally understand what President Obama I believe reminded his daughters after a particular event— progress is not often a straight line. Seeing lower State become a haven for outdoor dining, safe biking and pedestrians, felt like meaningful progress. What will feel like even more progress is if when my kids are old enough to drive, they aren't as antsy as I was for the "freedom" of it, because they've already been (safely) biking around town. I hope our City and the committee does not make the notion of sustained progress feel even more elusive by applying a 19th c. mindset to address 21st c. issues (ie. the need for #climate friendly and resilient infrastructure, community building, infill housing and more equitable access to green spaces). It's hard to imagine an issue these days that could be addressed by adding more driving back into the mix. I sincerely appreciate the voice of our local Strong Towns SB group- offering research proven suggestions, including: "eliminating car traffic from the entire length of the promenade from the 400 block to the 1300 block and creating a pedestrian-centered promenade with dedicated space for public transit and cyclists..." SB folks: if you haven't already, make your opinion heard. SSACSecretary@SantaBarbaraCA.gov https://lnkd.in/g_VW2hHw Sullivan Israel Joanna Kaufman Mack Carlson Alina Werth

🌟This is public transport in Finland! 🇫🇮 The key to maintaining top-notch public facilities lies in fostering a sense of community responsibility. 🚇Everyone agrees to behave themselves, not to destroy public property, and nobody tolerates antisocial behavior. 🌳In your country, consider investing in high-quality public conveniences like well-maintained parks or innovative transport hubs to encourage respect and care from the community. 🚌What is the most expensive public convenience you can offer that people will cherish and protect? 🌿For example, in Perth, Kings Park with its world-class amenities remains untouched due to the collective pride and ownership felt by the community. #publictransport #innovation #finland

I was recently asked a few questions in relation to the Preston Market!! HERE are my answers . Public acquisition of Preston Market will ensure the improvement, greening & community management of Preston Market. Do you support the public acquisition of Preston Market? Your question isn’t entirely clear. When you ask if I support public acquisition, are you referring to state, federal government, or council acquiring the market? When we speak about the Preston Market, we must acknowledge that the it is currently owned by three separate property owners. Are you asking about the market's footprint, the total land owned by Salta, or the other interconnecting two sites? I’ll need more context to fully understand and respond to your question. As a dedicated supporter of the market, I believe it's important to clarify these points before providing an accurate answer. My current campaign centres around "Protect what we Love, Create what we Need." Preston urgently requires biodiverse open spaces that foster community connections, especially south of Bell Street. So, yes, I strongly support the creation, implementation, and management of a much-needed urban revitalisation in our municipality. Places of social connection are paramount for all.
